The relationship between pubertal timing and under-nutrition in rural Pakistan

Susan C. Campisi et al.

Summary: Sexual development in children and adolescents in rural Pakistan was found to have a median onset age of 11.9 years for girls and 12.3 years for boys, with menarche occurring at 12.9 years. Undernutrition, such as stunting and thinness, was prevalent in this community, with most adolescents experiencing multiple nutrient deficiencies. However, undernutrition was associated with older ages for early puberty stages but not for puberty completion. Efforts to improve nutrient deficiencies and undernutrition should be prioritized in rural Pakistan.
