The Minimal Clinically Important Difference: A Review of Clinical Significance

David A. Bloom et al.

Summary: This article describes the various methods for determining the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) and discusses their respective strengths and limitations. The article emphasizes the importance of standardization in establishing MCIDs for orthopaedic patient-reported outcome measures and the need for better study design in this area.

Defining the Patient Acceptable Symptom State for the HOOS JR and KOOS JR After Primary Total Joint Arthroplasty

Kyle N. N. Kunze et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to define the thresholds for patient acceptable symptom state (PASS) for the Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score, Joint Replacement (KOOS JR) and the Hip disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score, Joint Replacement (HOOS JR) after total joint arthroplasty (TJA). Using a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, the study found that PASS thresholds were influenced by patient-specific factors.

AAOS Clinical Practice Guideline Summary: Management of Osteoarthritis of the Knee (Nonarthroplasty), Third Edition

Robert H. Brophy et al.

Summary: This article presents an evidence-based clinical practice guideline for the management of knee osteoarthritis without joint replacement surgery. The guideline includes both nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic interventions for symptomatic knee osteoarthritis. It provides 29 recommendations for healthcare professionals and information for patients. The article also emphasizes the need for further research on intra-articular corticosteroids, hyaluronic acid, and platelet-rich plasma.

The projected volume of primary and revision total knee arthroplasty will place an immense burden on future heath care systems over the next 30 years

Alexander Klug et al.

Summary: The incidence rate of primary TKA is projected to increase by 43% by 2050, with around 225,957 primary TKAs expected. Meanwhile, the annual total number of revision procedures is forecast to increase even more rapidly, with around 47,313 procedures expected by 2050, primarily due to periprosthetic joint infection (PJI).

Minimum Clinically Important Difference A Metric That Matters in the Age of Patient-Reported Outcomes

Aditya Karhade et al.

Summary: There is no consensus on the calculation of the minimum clinically important difference (MCID) for PROMIS in orthopaedic research and clinical practice. The varied calculation methods can result in a range of values, limiting the translatability of research efforts. Completion rate and follow-up period also play a role in influencing MCID values and should be reported together with study results.
