Immune checkpoint upregulation in periprosthetic joint infection

Shay Warren et al.

Summary: This study examines the expression of PD-1 and PD-L1 in periprosthetic tissue of patients with PJI and aseptic failure, finding that PD-L1 expression is upregulated in PJI patients and associated with recurrent infection.

Synchronous Periprosthetic Joint Infections: A Scoping Review of the Literature

Andrea Sambri et al.

Summary: Prosthetic joint infections occurring in multiple joints at the same time are rare and associated with high mortality rates. Risk factors include multiple prosthetic joints, rheumatoid arthritis, neoplasia, bacteremia, and immune-modulating therapy. One-stage exchange seems to be a favorable treatment option, but more research is needed to determine the best approach.

Synchronous Periprosthetic Joint Infections: High Mortality, Reinfection, and Reoperation

Elizabeth B. Gausden et al.

Summary: Synchronous periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs) are a serious complication with high mortality rates. Patients with synchronous PJIs have a high 30-day mortality rate of 18% and a quarter of them require unplanned reoperation within the first year. Rheumatoid arthritis and liver disease are associated with increased risk of mortality.

The Risk Factor and Outcome of Metachronous Periprosthetic Joint Infections: A Retrospective Analysis With a Minimum Ten-Year Follow-Up

Sheng-Hsun Lee et al.

Summary: The study reviewed 294 cases of periprosthetic joint infections, finding that 19.79% of patients developed subsequent infections after the initial infection. The causative pathogens in subsequent infections were mostly the same as the initial infection, with identified risk factors including systemic inflammatory response syndrome, multiple stages of surgery, and infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

The application of topical vancomycin powder for the prevention of surgical site infections in primary total hip and knee arthroplasty: A meta-analysis

Zhi Peng et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the effectiveness of topical vancomycin powder in preventing infections after primary total joint arthroplasty. The results showed that the use of vancomycin powder significantly reduced the incidence of SSIs and PJI, recommending topical administration of vancomycin powder before wound closure for patients after a comprehensive evaluation.
