Aspirin Thromboprophylaxis Is Associated With Less Major Bleeding Events Following Total Joint Arthroplasty

Noam Shohat et al.

Summary: This study compared the incidence of major bleeding events (MBEs) in patients receiving aspirin as venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis vs other chemoprophylaxis following total joint arthroplasty (TJA). The results showed that patients who received aspirin had a lower risk of major bleeding. Factors such as age, body mass index, anesthesia score, and surgical factors were independently associated with an increased risk of MBE.

Summary: The study found that using aspirin alone as prophylaxis for venous thromboembolism after total hip arthroplasty is not inferior to other anticoagulants, not only in preventing venous thromboembolism, but also in terms of bleeding events.

Clinician Trends in Prescribing Direct Oral Anticoagulants for US Medicare Beneficiaries

Kevin M. Wheelock et al.

Summary: Despite the increasing use of DOAC among Medicare beneficiaries, many clinicians in the study continued to prefer warfarin over DOACs as their primary or only anticoagulant. Addressing barriers to the uptake of these medications is necessary to realize their potential benefits for patients.
