Nanomaterials for UV protective textiles

UV-shielding and strong poly(vinyl alcohol) composite films reinforced with zinc oxide@polydopamine core-shell nanoparticles

Summary: In this study, zinc oxide@polydopamine (ZnO@PDA) core-shell nanoparticles were prepared by depositing dopamine (DA) on the surface of ZnO nanoparticles. It was found that ZnO@PDA exhibited lower photocatalytic activity and higher UV absorbance. Moreover, ZnO@PDA could be homogenously dispersed in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix and form strong hydrogen bonding interaction with PVA molecular chains, resulting in excellent UV-shielding, mechanical, and anti-UV aging properties of the prepared PVA/ZnO@PDA composite films.

After accelerated weathering tests, the treated sample showed a significantly lower total color change compared to the untreated sample. These environmentally friendly and weathering resistant coatings are expected to be widely applied to various substrates in the future.

A molecularly engineered bioderived polyphosphate for enhanced flame retardant, UV-blocking and mechanical properties of poly(lactic acid)
