Extended topological valley-locked surface acoustic waves

Ji-Qian Wang et al.

Summary: The authors provide experimental evidence for extended topological valley-locked states and propose their application in acoustics devices. By combining Dirac semimetals and topological insulators, they demonstrate reduced backscattering and improved matching of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) with interdigital transducers. Through the design and manufacturing of miniaturized phononic crystals on a semi-infinite substrate, they successfully realize valley-locked edge transport for SAWs. This work has important implications for future acoustic information processing, sensing, and manipulation.

Acoustic cloak designed by topology optimization for acoustic-elastic coupled systems

Garuda Fujii et al.

Summary: This study focuses on developing optimal acoustic cloaks through topology optimization and acoustic-elastic interactions, in order to render objects unobservable to airborne and water-borne sounds. The designed cloaks are expressed as iso-surfaces representing sharp structural boundaries between acoustic and elastic media, ensuring that scatterers remain invisible to sound waves of multiple frequencies from various angles.

Higher-order topological semimetal in acoustic crystals

Qiang Wei et al.

Summary: The concept of higher-order topological materials goes beyond first-order topological states, featuring 1D hinge states and 0D corner states. A second-order topological Weyl semimetal has been experimentally demonstrated in a 3D-printed acoustic crystal, showcasing Weyl points, Fermi arc surface states, and hinge states.

Observation of elastic spin with chiral meta-sources

Weitao Yuan et al.

Summary: The directional routing of one-way classical waves has attracted significant interest in spin-related phenomena, particularly in the study of pseudo-spin in meta-structures. Recent predictions of intrinsic spin angular momentum of elastic waves have led to the observation of selective excitation of unidirectional propagation. Experimental demonstration of elastic spin waves, particularly Rayleigh and Lamb waves, using chiral meta-sources has shown promising results in terms of unidirectional routing and spin-momentum locking.
