Magnetic properties and cryogenic magnetocaloric effect in monoclinic RE8.66(BO3)2(B2O5)O8 (RE = Er, Tm) compounds

Quanyi Liu et al.

Summary: Researchers have successfully fabricated two rare earth borate compounds and evaluated their crystallographic and magnetic parameters, as well as cryogenic magnetocaloric effects. These monoclinic rare earth borates show more considerable low-field magnetocaloric effects than rare earth orthoborates, making them potential candidates for cryogenic magnetic refrigeration.

Giant low-field magnetocaloric effect in hexagonal Eu3B2O6 compound

Quanyi Liu et al.

Summary: A modified solid-phase reaction method was used to synthesize polycrystalline Eu3B2O6 as a novel cryogenic magnetocaloric material. The magnetocaloric effect, magnetic properties, and crystal structure of the compound were investigated. The compound undergoes a second-order magnetic-phase transition from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic at 8 K and has a hexagonal structure belonging to the R-3c space group. The compound exhibits a high magnetic entropy change, temperature averaged entropy change, and refrigeration capacity, making it a promising candidate for cryogenic magnetic refrigeration.

NaGdS2: A Promising Sulfide for Cryogenic Magnetic Cooling

Charlene Delacotte et al.

Summary: This study reports on the magnetocaloric properties of the AGdS(2) family and finds that NaGdS2 exhibits the best performance. The layered structure of NaGdS2 significantly improves the magnetocaloric properties compared to LiGdS2. These magnetocaloric figures of merit highlight the promising potential of Gd-based sulfides as magnetic refrigeration materials.

Magnetocaloric effect in LiLn6O5(BO3)3 (Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho)

Yuwei Chen et al.

Summary: A series of lanthanide-rich oxyborates LiLn(6)O(5)(BO3)(3) (LLnOB, Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho) were synthesized, and their magnetic and magnetocaloric properties were investigated. The results suggest that LiGd6O5(BO3)(3) and LiHo6O5(BO3)(3) could be promising candidates as magnetic refrigerants.

Large magnetic entropy change in weberite-type oxides Gd3MO7 (M = Nb, Sb, and Ta)

Ziyu Yang et al.

Summary: This work investigates the structure, magnetic properties, and cryogenic magnetocaloric effect of weberite-type oxides Gd3MO7 (M = Nb, Sb, and Ta) through various experimental methods. It is observed that Gd3SbO7 exhibits a remarkably large isothermal magnetic entropy change under an external field of 9 T at 2.0 K. Moreover, these oxides demonstrate impressive cooling power and adiabatic temperature change compared to the benchmark magnetic refrigerant GGG.

Gd(OH)F2: A Promising Cryogenic Magnetic Refrigerant

Qiaofei Xu et al.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis and properties of magnetic refrigerants with a large magnetocaloric effect and low magnetic ordering temperature, and discovers that the introduction of fluoride anions can effectively regulate the magnetic ordering temperature of the refrigerants. Among them, sample 3 has a magnetic ordering temperature of 0.5 K and exhibits a large magnetocaloric effect in the temperature range of 0.5-4 K.

Heat capacity and magnetocaloric effect in the zircon and scheelite phases of RCrO4, R 1/4 Tb, Er, Ho

E. Palacios et al.

Summary: In this study, magnetization and heat capacity measurements were conducted on new phases of zircon and scheelite materials to investigate their magnetocaloric effect (MCE) under different temperatures and magnetic fields. The results showed that zircons exhibit a high MCE near their Curie point, while scheelites demonstrate antiferromagnetic behavior. The behavior of rare earth elements also differs in scheelite materials.
