Novel Geometric Ferroelectric EuInO3 Single Crystals with Topological Vortex Domains

You Wu et al.

Summary: RInO3 (R: rare-earth element) has attracted unprecedented research attention due to its geometric ferroelectricity and spin liquid state. However, further investigation on the structure-property relationship based on well-developed single crystals is needed. A EuInO3 crystal was obtained for the first time by the laser floating zone method. The presence of ferroelectricity and interesting topological vortex domains were revealed, providing great potential for vortex memory devices.

The Third Dimension of Ferroelectric Domain Walls

Erik D. Roede et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the importance of nanoscale structure for the emergent transport properties in the 3D network of neutral and charged domain walls in ErMnO3. By using tomographic microscopy techniques and finite element modeling, the contribution of domain walls within the bulk is clarified and the significance of curvature effects for the local conduction is shown down to the nanoscale.

Confinement-Driven Inverse Domain Scaling in Polycrystalline ErMnO3

Jan SchultheiB et al.

Summary: The study found that with the increase of grain size, smaller domains are formed in improper ferroelectric materials, and vortex/anti-vortex pairs and individual vortices annihilate at the boundaries between grains. This phenomenon provides new opportunities for topology-based domain engineering and the tuning of ferroelectric properties.

Insulating improper ferroelectric domain walls as robust barrier layer capacitors

Lukas Puntigam et al.

Summary: This study reports the dielectric properties of improper ferroelectric material h-ErMnO3, revealing two distinct relaxation features contributing to high and even colossal dielectric permittivity values. The internal barrier layer capacitance (BLC) related to insulating domain walls is found to play a significant role in the high dielectric constants observed in the material. Unlike proper ferroelectrics, in h-ErMnO3, the insulating domain walls are topologically protected, enabling operation under substantially higher electric fields.
