Single-shot femtosecond bulk micromachining of silicon with mid-IR tightly focused beams

Evgenii Mareev et al.

Summary: Silicon, as the second most abundant element on earth after oxygen, remains crucial for key technologies. The demand for higher flexibility of silicon modification has led to the use of mid-IR ultrafast lasers for on-chip and in-bulk inscription. These lasers provide control over deepness, three-dimensionality, and size and morphology of created modifications, paving the way for new approaches in silicon micromachining.

Soliton crystals in optical Kerr microresonators in the presence of thermo-optic effects

B. Azah Bei Cho et al.

Summary: The influence of thermo-optic effects on the shape profiles of soliton crystals in optical Kerr microresonators was investigated in this study. A model was proposed, which consists of the Lugiato-Lefever equation coupled with the one-dimensional heat diffusion equation. Numerical solutions were obtained for the model equations, focusing on the thermo-optic effects on the amplitude and instantaneous frequency of the optical field, as well as the temperature profile in the microresonator cavity. It was found that thermo-optic effects do not hinder the formation of soliton crystals in optical Kerr microresonators, but strong thermal detuning reduces the soliton-crystal amplitude. Furthermore, the model predicts that the temperature profile in the microresonator cavity is insensitive to the specific spatio-temporal profile of the soliton crystal.

Laser dynamics in nonlinear transparent media with electron plasma generation: effects of electron-hole radiative recombinations

P. Kameni Nteutse et al.

Summary: The performance of optical devices made from laser micromachining on nonlinear transparent materials relies on laser parameters, material properties, and physical processes. A theoretical study explores the competition between multiphoton absorption, plasma ionization, and electron-hole radiative recombination processes in Kerr nonlinear materials. Numerical simulations show different behaviors in continuous-wave operation and electron plasma density evolution based on the strength of radiative recombination processes.

Femtosecond laser inscriptions in Kerr nonlinear transparent media: dynamics in the presence of K-photon absorptions, radiative recombinations and electron diffusions

Emmanuel O. Akeweje et al.

Summary: This study considers a model describing femtosecond laser inscriptions in a transparent medium with Kerr nonlinearity, examining the effects of competition between multi-photon absorptions, radiative recombination, and electron diffusion processes on temporal profiles of laser amplitude and plasma density. The results show that taking electron diffusion processes into account favors periodic structures in temporal profiles of laser and plasma density, with an increase in pulse repetition rate in the optical soliton train and formation of multi-periodic anharmonic wave patterns in plasma density.

Modulational instability in thin liquid film flowing down an inclined uniformly heated plate

R. J. Noumana Issokolo et al.

Summary: The study investigates the modulational instability properties of interfacial disturbances in the flow of a thin liquid film down an inclined, uniformly heated plate under the influence of thermal Marangoni effects. It reveals that the interplay between linear and nonlinear effects results in the evolution of disturbances as superpositions of traveling periodic waves with different amplitudes, while strong nonlinearity leads to different modulated wavy structures. The appearance and evolution of modulated disturbance profiles are influenced by both the amplitude of the disturbances and the linear dissipative term.
