Topological metamaterial plates: Numerical investigation, experimental validation and applications

Anchen Ni et al.

Summary: In this study, the concept of topological insulator is introduced into plates in civil engineering, and successfully obtains topologically protected interface states of flexural waves. Through topological wave transport between two domains with distinct topological phases, this novel topological metamaterial plate realizes wave guiding and wave attenuation simultaneously. The influence of geometric and material parameters on the interface states and band gap is discussed in detail. The dynamic characteristics of this novel type of plate are studied through full-field simulation in the frequency domain and experimentally validated. The study demonstrates high transmission efficiency and strong robustness against defects. The performance of the topological metamaterial plate in ambient vibration control is assessed based on measured acceleration records, facilitating the application of topological insulators in vibration mitigation, energy harvesting, and signal detection.

Complex dispersion analysis of topologically protected interface states in two-dimensional viscoelastic phononic crystals

Tian-Xue Ma et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the viscoelastic effect on the topologically protected interface states in two-dimensional solid phononic crystals (PnCs). It demonstrates that even with the introduction of material viscoelasticity, the topological interface states still exist but become complex wave modes that attenuate as they propagate in the viscoelastic PnCs. The findings also show the robustness of these interface states against sharp bends or local disorders in the viscoelastic PnC structures.

Topological cavities in phononic plates for robust energy harvesting

Zhihui Wen et al.

Summary: The study proposes using phononic thin plate systems for robust energy harvesting application relying on zero-dimensional cavities confined by the Kekule's distorted topological vortices. The harvesting power induced by topological cavities is about 30 times that of the bare plate. Further studies show that the proposed energy harvesting system is highly robust against symmetry-preserving defects and is less influenced even for symmetry-breaking defects at moderate perturbation level.

Flexural wave energy harvesting by the topological interface state of a phononic crystal beam

Tian-Xue Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, a 3D-printed phononic crystal (PnC) beam with a topological interface state is designed for harvesting the mechanical energy of flexural waves. By changing the distance between grooves, PnC beams with different topological phases can be achieved and the existence of the topological interface state is verified both numerically and experimentally. By attaching a piezoelectric disc at the interface, the mechanical energy can be converted into electricity. The PnC harvester shows significantly amplified output power at the frequency corresponding to the interface state compared to traditional beam harvesters.

Periodically alternated elastic support induced topological phase transition in phononic crystal beam systems

Zhenyu Chen et al.

Summary: This manuscript proposes a new approach to break the spatial symmetry in beam systems by tuning the elastic stiffnesses of periodically alternated elastic supports. The bending characteristics of a phononic crystal beam on such a support system are studied using experimental and numerical methods. The results show the appearance of a bandgap and capture mode shape inversion and Zak phase transition. Furthermore, the topologically protected interface modes in an array constructed with periodically arranged unit cells are analyzed. This general mechanism can potentially be applied to other mechanical and dynamic systems to establish topological phase transitions.

Summary: This paper proposes an inerter enhanced floating floor structure (In-FFS) for seismic hazard mitigation. The In-FFS, equipped with a one-dimensional inerter-based composite system on traditional floating floor structure (FFS), can significantly improve seismic performance. Modal participation property analysis and time history analyses demonstrate that the In-FFS reduces relative displacement and decreases floor acceleration and inter-story drift of the primary structure.

Summary: This study focuses on the design of tunable phononic crystal plates with Y-shaped prisms to support valley transport of elastic waves based on an analogy of the quantum valley Hall effect, breaking mirror symmetry to open new bandgaps. By designing interfaces between ETIs with different symmetry-broken geometries, topologically protected edge states are supported. A reconfigurable device for elastic wave channel switching and beam splitting is demonstrated both numerically and experimentally, showing potential for practical applications in broadband elastic wave transmission.

Broadband inverted T-shaped seismic metamaterial

Yi Zeng et al.

Summary: This study introduces a seismic metamaterial consisting of inverted T-shaped structures with an ultra-wide first bandgap for strong attenuation of seismic waves. By analyzing complex band structures, it is found that the bandgap is divided into two parts with surface evanescent waves and no surface modes, affecting the propagation of seismic surface waves differently. The effectiveness of the ultra-wide bandgap is validated through large-scale field experiments with a two-dimensional version of the metamaterial.
