Scaling, saturation, and upper bounds in the failure of topologically interlocked structures

Shai Feldfogel et al.

Summary: Topological Interlocking Structures (TIS) have been extensively researched, however, the effects of Young's modulus and the friction coefficient on the structural mechanics of centrally loaded TIS panels remain unclear. In this study, a parametric investigation is conducted to clarify the impact of these two parameters on the behavior and failure of centrally-loaded TIS panels. The findings indicate a linear relationship between structural response parameters and Young's modulus, saturation with the friction coefficient, and the saturated response as an upper-bound on the capacity of centrally loaded TIS panels reported in the literature. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of interlocked structural forms.

Nonlinear mechanics of fragmented beams

Itay Odessa et al.

Summary: This paper presents an analytical model for the nonlinear analysis of fragmented beams, which are assembled without any binding material or connector. The study focuses on the nonlinear behavior caused by the detachment and stress localization between the fragments. Numerical solutions are compared with finite element simulations, and a parametric study on axial compression and boundary conditions is conducted to investigate the strength and energy absorption capacity of the beams.

On the failure of beam-like topologically interlocked structures

Ioannis Koureas et al.

Summary: This study investigates the failure mechanisms and response capacities of topologically interlocked structures through parametric analysis and analytical-computational methods. By controlling the combination of structure height and friction coefficient, the failure mechanism can be influenced to be slip-governed or stick-governed. Furthermore, the sticking mechanism and rotation of the blocks have a saturation effect on the mechanical performance of the structure, providing a theoretical upper bound for achievable performance.

Tensile behavior of bio-inspired hierarchical suture joint with uniform fractal interlocking design

Wenzhi Wang et al.

Summary: Inspired by hierarchical interlocking in nature, a design method for triangular suture joint based on Koch fractal interlocking was developed and tested through tensile experiments. While the second order suture joint exhibited high strength and ductility, increasing the hierarchical order from two to three did not improve stiffness and strength, and even decreased fracture toughness.

Design of architectured materials based on topological and geometrical interlocking

Yuri Estrin et al.

Summary: This article introduces a design principle that segments a structure into a set of topologically or geometrically interlocked elements, discussing historical background, different types of interlocking structures, generation methods, and potential applications. The proposed structures offer beneficial features such as tolerance to local failures, enhanced bending compliance, high sound and energy absorption, ease of assembly and disassembly, and nearly full recyclability.
