Seasonal and spatial vulnerability to agricultural damage by elephants in the western Serengeti, Tanzania

Kristen Denninger Snyder et al.

Summary: In the western Serengeti of Tanzania, African elephant populations are increasing, leading to conflicts with agricultural interests. Damage to crops threatens livelihoods, and understanding historical records can inform resource allocation and land use planning efforts.

Changing seasonal, temporal and spatial crop-raiding trends over 15 years in a human-elephant conflict hotspot

Lydia N. Tiller et al.

Summary: Human-wildlife conflict is increasing due to rapid natural vegetation loss and fragmentation. A study in the Trans Mara, Kenya revealed significant changes in elephant crop-raiding patterns between 1999-2000 and 2014-2015. While incidents increased, the amount of damage per farm decreased, with crop-raiding becoming more year-round and involving new elephant group types. Spatially, crop-raiding incidents were more frequent near protected areas in 2014-2015.

Spatial ecology of conflicts: unravelling patterns of wildlife damage at multiple scales

Carlos Bautista et al.

Summary: Human encroachment into natural habitats often leads to conflicts arising from wildlife damage to agriculture and livestock. Spatial risk modelling is a valuable tool for understanding wildlife damage and reducing conflicts. By considering ecological and management factors at multiple scales, such as from household to landscape scales, we found that brown bear damage to apiaries in the North-eastern Carpathians is influenced by factors like bear avoidance of humans and habitat preferences at various scales. Developing integrated-scale risk maps can result in more accurate predictions compared to single-scale models.
