Colonisation Patterns of Nosema ceranae in the Azores Archipelago

Summary: This study used molecular tools to survey the Azores and detect the distribution of Nosema ceranae, an important honey bee pathogen. The results showed that N. ceranae is present and dominant in the Azores, and it colonized the archipelago relatively recently. The pathogen rapidly spread across other islands, and Santa Maria remains one of the few areas free of N. ceranae and Varroa destructor, two major stressors for honey bees.
