Occurrence of a plasmid co-carrying cfr(D) and poxtA2 linezolid resistance genes in Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus casseliflavus from porcine manure, Italy

Summary: This study presented an optimized screening approach for the optrA gene, an important mechanism of antimicrobial resistance to linezolid as a last resort for the treatment of infections caused by multiresistant Gram-positive bacteria. We revealed a high fecal carriage rate of the optrA gene among adults by this method and reported the first identification of optrA in Lactococcus formosensis, as well as the identification of this gene in Vagococcus lutrae and the poxtA gene in Ligilactobacillus salivarius of human origin, suggesting the wide spread of the optrA gene in the Gram-positive bacterial community.

Summary: This study analyzed the core and accessory genomes of different subspecies and infected hosts of Streptococcus dysgalactiae (SD). The results showed that there is host-specific SD and the subspecies SDSD from bovine has specific virulence determinants and carbohydrate metabolic functions. In addition, the incidence of SDSD human infections may be underestimated due to failures in identification based on the hemolytic patterns.

Summary: Movement disorders in rhinoceroses can be caused by lesions affecting the feet and interdigital space. This case study focuses on a 3-year-old male Greater one-horned rhinoceros that developed a severe movement disorder of the right hind limb and eventually died. The pathological analysis revealed a retroperitoneal abscess and chronic thrombosis of the right iliac artery with the presence of Streptococcus dysgalactiae subspecies equisimilis. The same bacteria was also found in the vaginal swab of the dam. This suggests that the list of differential diagnoses for lameness in rhinoceroses should consider causes beyond extremities.
