Production, physiological response, and calcium and magnesium balance of lactating Holstein cows fed different sources of supplemental magnesium with or without ruminal buffer

R. R. Lobo et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of replacing magnesium oxide (MgO) with calcium-magnesium hydroxide (CaMg(OH)2) on Holstein dairy cows. The results showed that CaMg(OH)2 can be used as a substitute for MgO without affecting the performance and overall physiological response of the cows.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of replacing magnesium oxide with calcium-magnesium carbonate on ruminal fermentation. The results showed no significant difference between the two, indicating that calcium-magnesium carbonate may be a viable alternative to magnesium oxide.

Effects of lactic acid-producing bacteria as direct-fed microbials on the ruminal microbiome

H. F. Monteiro et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to evaluate the changes in ruminal microbiome associated with the addition of Lactobacillus plantarum GB-LP1 as direct-fed microbials in high-producing dairy cow diets. The results showed that the inclusion of the microbial additives mainly affected the bacterial composition in the liquid phase, leading to a decrease in ammonia nitrogen concentration. The relative abundance of fibrolytic and peptidase activity bacteria decreased with the inclusion of the direct-fed microbials. These findings provide insights into the regulatory effects of direct-fed microbials on the digestive system of dairy cows.

Effects of supplemental source of magnesium and inclusion of buffer on ruminal microbial fermentation in continuous culture

J. A. Arce-Cordero et al.

Summary: In this study, we evaluated the effect of different sources of magnesium on ruminal fermentation, finding that the source did not significantly impact fermentation variables, but soluble magnesium concentration was higher for MgO compared to BLN. Buffer supplementation increased ruminal pH, acetate and branched-chain VFA proportions, and NDF digestibility, with interactions observed for propionate, butyrate, and NH3-N based on magnesium source. These results suggest that both MgO and BLN can promote similar ruminal fermentation at a concentration of 0.25% Mg, but buffer supplementation can have varying effects based on the magnesium source used.
