Development and growth of the human fetal sacroiliac joint revisited: a comparison with the temporomandibular joint

Ji Hyun Kim et al.

Summary: The development of the human fetal sacroiliac joint involves unequal bone development and delayed cavitation. This is similar to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). A study of fetal specimens revealed that ossification of the ilium extended to the joint at 12 weeks, followed by joint cartilage development and cavitation. In contrast, the TMJ and humeroradial joint did not exhibit the same sequence of ossification, cartilage development, and cavitation.

Paratenon of the cruciate ligaments of the knee: a macroscopic and histological study of human foetuses

J. H. Kim et al.

Summary: This study observed the paratenons associated with the cruciate ligaments in human fetuses and found that the paratenons contained abundant blood vessels. The cruciate ligaments were mainly embedded in the paratenons, and differences in prenatal knee movements may lead to differences in the thickness of the paratenons among fetuses. Newborns may have limited knee flexion due to the burden of the thick paratenons, and slight twisting or rotation can disrupt the paratenons and accelerate cavitation.

Cranial synchondroses of primates at birth

Timothy D. Smith et al.

Summary: Histological and immunohistochemical methods were used to examine cranial synchondroses in newborn heads from nine genera of primates, revealing that only four midline synchondroses have the potential to actively affect basicranial angularity and facial orientation during the perinatal timeframe, while some joints in anthropoids retain active growth center characteristics postnatally.

Inward collapse of the nasal cavity: Perinatal consolidation of the midface and cranial base in primates

Timothy D. Smith et al.

Summary: Living primates exhibit a reduction in nasal cavity spaces and structures due to constraints on interorbital breadth. Ontogenetic study of the primate nasal capsule reveals differences in the development of the posterior nasal cupula (PNC) between species, with loss of perichondrium preceding resorption of the posterior end. These results suggest that the consolidation of the basicranial and facial skeletons may occur earlier in primates than in other mammals, limiting nasal complexity during development.

Association between the developing sphenoid and adult morphology: A study using sagittal sections of the skull base from human embryos and fetuses

Masahito Yamamoto et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the anatomical connections between each element of the fetal sphenoid and adult morphology, finding distinct developmental links between the orbitosphenoid, basisphenoid, ala temporalis, and alar process in fetal and adult forms.
