Microbial and thermogenic hydrogen sulfide in the Qianjiang Depression of Jianghan Basin: Insights from sulfur isotope and volatile organic sulfur compounds measurements

Qilin Xiao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the origins of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in natural gas by analyzing the sulfur isotopic compositions, chemical compositions, and isotopic fractions of various compounds. It revealed that the main contribution of H2S is from bacterial sulfate reduction (BSR) while a secondary contribution is from thermogenic processes, specifically thermal cracking alteration of organic matters (TCA). The distribution patterns of volatile organic sulfur compounds (VOSCs) in natural gas were found to be key indicators of the origin of H2S, providing valuable insights into H2S generation pathways within low-temperature regimes.

Carbon and sulfur isotopic composition of alkyl- and benzo-thiophenes provides insights into their origins and formation pathways

Lubna Shawar et al.

Summary: Thiophenic compounds extracted from immature sedimentary rocks in the Upper Cretaceous were studied for their structures, distributions, delta C-13, and delta S-34 values, indicating potential different biological origins and formation pathways. The variations in sulfurization pathways and origins of individual organic sulfur compounds enhanced the utilization as paleoenvironmental indicators.
