Study on pyrolysis characteristics and kinetics of mixed waste plastics under different atmospheres

Tilun Shan et al.

Summary: The Thermochemical method (pyrolysis) is a promising means to treat waste plastics and convert them into high value-added products. This study explored the pyrolysis characteristics of single/mixed plastics under different atmospheres and calculated the kinetic parameters using two kinetic models. The results showed that carbon dioxide atmosphere can reduce the pyrolysis temperature of plastics. The study also provided theoretical support for the environmentally friendly recycling technology of plastic waste.

Use of polypropylene pyrolysis oil in alternative fuel production

Jochen Uebe et al.

Summary: Polypropylene (PP) was recycled using slow pyrolysis at low temperature. The highest yields of liquid product were obtained at 350 degrees C and 400 degrees C. The pyrolysis oils had properties that met certain standards, but some properties exceeded the reference values stated in the standards, limiting their use in alternative fuel production.

Carbon dioxide-mediated thermochemical conversion of banner waste using cobalt oxide catalyst as a strategy for plastic waste treatment

Nahyeon Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of CO2 thermochemical agent and a metal oxide catalyst (Co3O4) on thermochemical banner waste conversion. The results showed that CO2 conversion yielded more non-condensable gases and increased CO and CH4 yields compared to non-catalytic conversion. The use of CO2 and Co3O4 reduced the yields of condensables and decomposition residue. Co3O4 promoted decarboxylation under N-2 and methanation and water-gas shift reaction under CO2. The simultaneous use of CO2 and Co3O4 minimized the formation of char and wax. The findings highlight the importance of CO2 and Co3O4 in plastic waste upcycling, specifically banner waste.

Catalytic Copyrolysis of Heavy Oil with Polypropylene

Ishaka Muhammad et al.

Summary: Catalytic and noncatalytic copyrolysis of plastic and heavy oil was studied using thermogravimetric analysis, pyrolysis reactor experiments, and GC analysis of the formed liquid. The presence of plastic in the copyrolysis increased the liquid yield and shifted the product distribution towards lighter fractions. Predegradation as a pretreatment method reduced the decomposition temperature, severity of catalyst deactivation, and increased synergistic effects during the thermal copyrolysis of plastic and heavy oil.

Pamreishang Kasar et al.

Summary: This study characterized the liquid products resulting from the co-cracking of residual fuel oil (RFO) with plastic waste. The co-cracking process showed a significant reduction in overall molecular weight and an increase in saturated aliphatic carbon content, as well as a decrease in protonated aromatic carbons. The liquid demonstrated potential as an alternate source of energy and added-value chemical product recovery routes.
