Selective detection of trace carbon monoxide at room temperature based on CuO nanosheets exposed to (111) crystal facets

Yuanyuan Wu et al.

Summary: Carbon monoxide (CO) intoxication incidents have been occurring frequently in recent years, highlighting the importance of sensitive CO detection. Most currently reported CO sensors have the disadvantage of requiring high working temperatures, making it a challenge to achieve sensitive detection at room temperature. In this study, CuO nanosheets with exposed active crystal facets and oxygen vacancy defects were successfully synthesized using a simple and environmentally friendly hydrothermal method. The sensor exhibited excellent comprehensive gas sensing performance, surpassing other sensors in detecting CO at room temperature. The response value to 100 ppm CO at room temperature reached as high as 39.6. Additionally, the sensor demonstrated excellent selectivity, low detection limit (100 ppb), good reproducibility, moisture resistance, and long-term stability (60 days). These outstanding gas sensing capabilities can be attributed to the unique structural characteristics of the 2D materials and the synergistic effect of the exposed active crystal facets and oxygen vacancy defects. Therefore, this sensor is expected to become a promising sensitive material for rapid and accurate detection of trace CO gas with low energy consumption, reducing the risk of poisoning and effectively protecting human life safety.

Jae-Hyoung Lee et al.

Summary: Ternary hybrid composite of PANI-loaded Co3O4-TiO2 nanoparticles was synthesized and investigated for acetone sensing at 25°C. The 0.01 wt% PANI-loaded 0.85TiO2-0.15 Co3O4 composite nanoparticles showed the highest response to acetone under UV illumination. The improved performance was attributed to the formation of p-n heterojunctions, promising effects of PANI, and the UV light effect. This study highlights the potential of these compounds or related compounds for highly reliable acetone sensing at 25°C.

Graphitic carbon-doped SnO2 nanosheets-wrapped tubes for chemiresitive ppb-level nitric oxide sensors operated near room temperature

Bao-Yu Song et al.

Summary: The development of low-temperature metal oxide-based sensors with high sensitivity towards harmful ppb-level gases remains challenging. In this study, the researchers successfully fabricated a wood-inspired metal oxide sensor with excellent gas-sensing performance. The sensor, based on graphitic carbon-doped SnO2 material (GC/SnO2-6), exhibited high response and short recovery time towards NO gas. The sensor's outstanding performance can be attributed to its biomorphic structure, which has homogeneous mesopores, large specific surface area, and the synergism of graphitic carbon doping and abundant oxygen vacancies. This study also explored the enhanced sensing mechanism in detail.

Youzhi Yang et al.

Summary: This study synthesized graphene-modified In-doped ZnO composites via a facile one-pot method, which showed high response to low-concentration formaldehyde at room temperature. The highest response to 10 ppm formaldehyde was achieved by GR/In-ZnO-300, which was 12 times higher than In-ZnO-300. The detection limit of GR/In-ZnO-300 was as low as 13 ppb, with a response of 137% at this concentration. The excellent formaldehyde sensing performance of GR/In-ZnO-300 was attributed to the separation and transmission capacity of photogenerated carriers, high specific surface area, and abundant oxygen defects on the surface.

E-nose based on a high-integrated and low-power metal oxide gas sensor array

Zhongzhou Li et al.

Summary: To improve the poor selectivity of semiconductor gas-sensor systems, a high-integrated and highly selective electronic nose (E-nose) with two independent gas-sensing elements on a low-power microhotplate (MHP) was proposed. Pd-SnO2 nanoflowers and Pd-WO3 microparticles were used to form an array of sensors on the MHP through electrohydrodynamic inkjet printing and in-situ infrared laser curing. The gas-sensor array achieved high response and low cross-sensitivity for various gases. Wavelet transform was applied to reduce noise and dimensionality of the signals. Qualitative identification accuracy of 99.86% was achieved using the k-nearest neighbor (kNN) model, while the p neighbors back propagation neural network (pN-BPNN) model improved quantitative identification accuracy for gas concentration estimation, especially for hydrogen.
