Enhanced mechanical properties of Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-3Cr-1Zr by bimodal lamellar precipitate microstructures via two-step aging

Yalong Wang et al.

Summary: A simple two-step aging heat treatment was proposed to design a bimodal microstructure with fine-scale and coarse alpha precipitates in a beta-titanium alloy. The multi-scale alpha microstructure exhibited a synergistic combination of yield strength and ductility, with deformation twins contributing to increased ductility and dislocation tangles contributing to higher strength. This work provides a new strategy to overcome the trade-off between strength and ductility by designing a heterogeneous microstructure.

Effect of heating treatment on the microstructural evolution and dynamic tensile properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloy produced by selective laser melting

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: The paper systematically studied the influence of heating treatment on the microstructure and dynamic tensile properties of Ti-6Al-4 V alloy processed by selective laser melting. It was found that the strength gradually decreased as the heating temperature increased, while the strain to fracture initially increased and then tended to drop after exceeding 13 transus. Good balance of strength and ductility can be achieved with alpha + 13 treatment.

The effect of precursory α and ωphase on microstructure evolution and tensile properties of metastable β titanium alloy

Ruixue Zhang et al.

Summary: The microstructure evolution and tensile properties in a metastable beta titanium alloy, Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-3Cr-0.6Fe alloy, with different aging conditions were investigated. The results showed that the nanoscale omega phase formed during low-temperature aging had no effect on the tensile properties. Additionally, the small size omega phase failed to assist secondary alpha(s) nucleation and refine alpha(s) during high-temperature aging due to omega dissolution. On the other hand, the alpha phase precipitated during low-temperature aging played a considerable role in refining lamellar alpha(s) and increasing tensile strength.

Achieving high strength and ductility in selective laser melting Ti-6Al-4V alloy by laser shock peening

Jiming Lv et al.

Summary: This research investigated the influences of laser shock peening (LSP) on the residual stress state, microstructures, and mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloy fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM). The results showed that LSP treatment adjusted the residual stress from tensile to compressive state and promoted the formation of high-density dislocations and parallel nano mechanical twins (nano-MTs) in the coarse lamellar alpha' structures, resulting in grain refinement. The ultimate tensile strength and elongation of the SLMed Ti-6Al-4V alloy increased by approximately 14.3% and 18.3% after LSP treatment, respectively. The study revealed that the combination of high levels of compressive residual stress and grain refinement achieved by LSP contributed to the enhancement of both strength and ductility in the alloy.

Summary: This study investigated the microtexture evolution of alpha in alpha + beta titanium alloys with different Mo content during thermomechanical processing. The results show that the addition of Mo element significantly weakens the microtexture of the prior alpha colony in Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo (Ti6246) alloy. The study demonstrates the effect of Mo content on the microtexture evolution during thermo-mechanical processing.

Formation and characteristics of bilamellar microstructure in Ti6242S titanium alloy under dual heat treatment

Yu Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the formation and characteristics of bilamellar microstructure in Ti6242S titanium alloy under dual heat treatment. It is found that the single-phase heat treatment and cooling process can generate more clusters in the grain boundary and primary lamellar alpha. During two-phase heat treatment, the secondary lamellar alpha nucleates at the grain boundaries or the wide interface of the primary lamellar alpha, and the existing primary lamellar alpha facilitates its formation. V-shaped lamellar alpha and triangular structures are also observed during the heat treatment process.

Dependence of strength and ductility on secondary a phase in a novel metastable-β titanium alloy

Haoyu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the correlation between microstructure, strength, and ductility in a novel metastable beta titanium alloy, Ti-6Mo-5V-3Al-2Fe. TEM and SEM were used to observe the secondary alpha phase (alpha(s)) of the aged alloy, and a room temperature tensile test characterized its strength and ductility. The results show that the minimum width and spacing of alpha(s) can be achieved after aging at 470 degrees C for 4h. The study establishes a relational equation between precipitation strengthening and alpha(s) spacing length and demonstrates that the average spacing length of alpha(s) plays a predominant role in the alloy's strengthening. The alloy's ductility is improved by the widening of alpha(s) spacing and the formation of Widmanstaeurotten a phase (WGB alpha) along beta grain boundaries after aging at 620 degrees C for 4h.

A new β-Ti alloy with good tensile properties by the mixed microstructure characteristics of α phase

Huijin Jin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical properties, microstructural characteristics, and deformation behavior of a novel high-strength metastable beta alloy. The study demonstrates that by controlling the size, morphology, and orientation combinations of the alpha phase in the beta matrix, a good combination of tensile strength and total elongation can be achieved. The microstructural characteristics of the alpha phase consisting of various alpha structures were obtained through specific heat treatments. The findings suggest that the acicular alpha precipitates act as dislocation barriers, leading to an improvement in the strength of the alloy.
