A comparative study of metastable phase separation for undercooled liquid Fe35Cu65 alloy under natural and forced cooling conditions

Yuhao Wu et al.

Summary: The influences of cooling style on the kinetics of metastable phase separation in undercooled liquid Fe35Cu65 alloy were systematically investigated. Results showed that the phase separation time increased linearly with the undercooling, and the morphology changed as well. Under forced cooling condition, a larger critical undercooling was required to form the core-shell separation morphology, and the phase separation time was shorter. The theoretical analyses were confirmed by numerical simulations and experiments.

Metastable phase separation kinetics controlled by superheating and undercooling of liquid Fe-Cu peritectic alloys

Yuhao Wu et al.

Summary: The effects of superheating and undercooling on the metastable phase separation kinetics for glass-fluxed Fe65Cu35 peritectic alloy were investigated. It was found that the increasing undercooling and superheating contributed to the extension of phase separation time and resulted in the expansion of the Cu-rich zone as well as the improvement of microhardness in the Fe-rich zone.

Rapid Eutectic Growth Kinetics of Undercooled Nb-Si Alloys at Electrostatic Levitation State

M. X. Li et al.

Summary: The rapid eutectic growth kinetics of undercooled Nb-Si alloys were investigated using electrostatic levitation (ESL) technique combined with a triggering method. Three distinct solidification paths leading to different microstructures and constituent phases were revealed by controlling the melt undercooling. The phase selection mechanism was clarified, and the coupled zone of (Nb) + Nb3Si eutectic was qualitatively predicted. The mechanical properties varied significantly with solidification paths, with the hardness decreasing and fracture toughness increasing in hypereutectic Nb-18.7 at.% Si alloy.

Effect of Co addition on solidification velocity, hardness and refined structure transformation mechanisms of undercooled Ni-Cu-Co alloys

Yukang An et al.

Summary: The effect of Co addition on the solidification velocity, hardness, and refined structure transformation of undercooled Ni-Cu-Co alloys has been investigated. It is found that Co addition increases the solidification velocity and recalescence effect by increasing the number of solidified crystal nucleus and solute diffusion velocity. The improved solidification velocity and stress-induced deformation effect by Co addition lead to increased low-angle grain boundaries and decreased grain size, resulting in significantly improved hardness of the refined structure.

Experimental Explorations and Lattice-Boltzmann Simulations for Macrosegregation Evolution Kinetics of Glass-Fluxed Immiscible Alloys

Yuhao Wu et al.

Summary: The macrosegregation evolution kinetics of model Fe65Cu35 immiscible alloy were systematically investigated, revealing the formation of two typical macrosegregation patterns with increasing undercooling. Marangoni convection, surface segregation, and Stokes motion were identified as dominant dynamic mechanisms responsible for macrosegregation evolution. The temperature gradient at the time of metastable phase separation and the phase separation time were found to play a crucial role in selecting the macrosegregation pattern.

Effect of Zr addition on metastable Liquid-Liquid Phase Separation of Cu-Fe alloys

Ho-Joon Moon et al.

Summary: Addition of Zr in Cu-Fe alloys was found to effectively activate γ-Fe nucleation and suppress liquid-liquid phase separation. A combination of thermal instrumental analysis and classical nucleation theory allowed for an effective assessment of LLPS behavior in Cu-Fe alloys.

Rapid Growth of TiNi intermetallic compound within undercooled Ti50Ni50 alloy under electrostatic levitation condition

P. F. Zou et al.

Summary: The relationship between solidification mechanism and undercooling was systematically explored using electrostatic levitation technology. It was found that with increasing undercooling, the growth velocity of the TiNi alloy exhibited a complex pattern, with a sharp increase once the undercooling exceeded a critical value. The presence of the R-phase in the TiNi matrix at large undercooling suggested incomplete martensitic transformation.
