Magnetorheological fluids: A concise review of composition, physicochemical properties, and models

Magdalena Osial et al.

Summary: Magnetorheological fluids (MRFs) are intelligent materials that can modify their rheological and mechanical properties with an external magnetic field. They are used in technology to create adaptive devices and suppress vibrations in mechanical systems. In this paper, we discuss previous research on MRF properties, focusing on flow, yield strength, and viscoelastic behavior. We also explore continuum and discrete modeling and highlight the importance of accurate and efficient models for understanding and predicting MRF behavior.

Research on the wear characteristics of magnetorheological fluid in sealing interface considering the interaction between surface roughness and magnetic particles

Shanshan Li et al.

Summary: This paper studies the influence of magnetorheological fluid (MRF) on the wear mechanism of sealing pairs under different surface roughness through theoretical analysis and experimental verification. The simulation analysis reveals that the coupling of roughness and microparticles changes the contact pressure and frictional stress distribution on the O-ring. The wear morphologies and analysis indicate that roughness affects the movement pattern of particles in the sealing gap, thereby determining the tribodynamic behavior of MRF. The study points out that the sealing wear under MRF is completely opposite to that of base oil.

An overview on properties and applications of magnetorheological fluids: Dampers, batteries, valves and brakes

Hamed Eshgarf et al.

Summary: This paper presents a literature review on the properties and applications of Magnetorheological fluids (MRFs). It discusses the magnetic particles, base fluids, and preparation methods of MRFs. The stability and properties of MRFs, as well as their behavior in different states, are also examined. The reversible transition of MRFs between liquid and semi-solid states, known as the magnetorheological effect, is highlighted. The challenges of low magnetic effect and instability are identified, and carbonyl iron particles are suggested as promising particles for MRFs. Various applications of MRFs in engineering, such as batteries, anti-lock braking systems, and shock absorbers, are discussed.
