Effect of Cu on the strengthening and embrittling of an FeCoNiCr-xCu HEA

Chengchao Du et al.

Summary: The effect of Cu concentration on the microstructure and mechanical properties of FeCoNiCr-xCu HEAs was studied. Low Cu concentrations contributed to solid solution strengthening, while higher concentrations led to the precipitation of nano Cu-rich particles which increased strength. However, excessive Cu concentration resulted in the formation of a weak continuous Cu-rich phase, leading to decreased strength and elongation.

Twins and grain boundaries-dominated the reverse Bauschinger effect and tension- compression asymmetry

Jinjie Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the tension-compression asymmetry and Bauschinger effect of single and polycrystalline aluminum under different loads using molecular dynamics methods. The results show that both types of aluminum exhibit work hardening under tensile and compressive loads, but the characteristics differ between single and polycrystalline aluminum. Additionally, the tension-compression asymmetry and Bauschinger effect are more pronounced in polycrystalline aluminum, with a reverse tension-compression asymmetry observed. The Bauschinger effect is caused by defects introduced through preloading, and the asymmetry is attributed to different microscopic defects.

Effects of structure relaxation and surface oxidation on nanoscopic wear behaviors of metallic glass

Qian Jia et al.

Summary: Both structure relaxation and oxidation of surface layer induced by thermal treatment or friction heat play significant roles in reducing wear of metallic glasses (MGs). The oxidized surface layer exhibits the best anti-wear performance, with significant reductions in both adhesive and ploughing friction, which is attributed to hindered interfacial bonding and enhanced wear resistance.

Effect of electrochemical hydrogen charging on the mechanical property and corrosion behavior of Ti-3Mo alloy

Zhimin Pan et al.

Summary: The effect of electrochemical hydrogen charging on the mechanical property and corrosion behavior of Ti-3Mo alloy was investigated. Failure analysis revealed that crack initiation and propagation did not occur along the crack tip of hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC), but tended to propagate along the alpha/beta interface. Moreover, i(corr) and i(p) increased with increased charging time, indicating that hydrogen charging deteriorated the corrosion resistance of the matrix due to the redox transformation process of the passive film.

Effect of Zr addition on coarse Laves phase stimulated nucleation of recrystallization in FeCrAl alloy

Wenbo Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of coarse Laves phase on the recrystallization behavior of Fe-Cr-Al alloys. The results show that the presence of coarse Laves phases in the matrix leads to finer grains due to particle stimulated nucleation (PSN). Zr addition increases the proportion of coarse Laves phase, promoting PSN and resulting in a fine grain size in the Fe-Cr-Al alloys. The Zr-modified Fe-Cr-Al sample with coarse Laves phases exhibits a high ultimate tensile strength of 600 MPa and an elongation of 28%, indicating improved formability. The superior combination of strength and ductility in this sample is attributed to grain refinement and discontinuous deformation. This study provides insights into the behavior and effects of coarse Laves phase, and offers potential for further design and microstructure control of Fe-Cr-Al alloys.

Manipulating molten pool dynamics during metal 3D printing by ultrasound

Zhichao Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, high-speed imaging and multi-physics modeling were used to investigate the flow characteristics and liquid-to-solid transformation in ultrasound-assisted direct energy deposition (UADED). It was found that the inertia force activated by ultrasound drives the molten pool to flow forward and backward along the vibration direction, resulting in poor surface quality. By developing a hybrid deposition strategy, ultrasound-induced defects can be minimized and a superior microstructure with alternating coarse- and fine-grains can be achieved. The layered microstructure leads to a 28% improvement in yield strength and a 15% improvement in ultimate tensile strength compared to additive manufacturing without ultrasound.

Role of stress-induced martensite on damage behavior in a metastable titanium alloy

J. F. Xiao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the damage behavior of a typical model metastable Ti-1023 alloy with dominant stress-induced martensite (SIM). The results show that SIM has a dual impact on the damage behavior of the alloy, either facilitating crack nucleation or inhibiting crack propagation depending on the martensitic lath spacing. Additionally, the effect of beta stability on the damage behavior is indirectly determined by the martensitic lath spacing, suggesting that grain boundary engineering should be utilized to fully explore the potential of SIM in developing strong and ductile/tough Ti alloys for broad industrial applications.

Effect of Cu-Rich Phase Precipitation on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of CoCrNiCux Medium-Entropy Alloys Prepared via Laser Directed Energy Deposition

Summary: By increasing the Cu content in CoCrNiCux alloys, the microstructure transitions from a single matrix phase to a dual-phase structure, accompanied by a shift in tensile fracture behavior from brittle to plastic. This results in an increase in tensile strength and ductility. Nanoprecipitates and neatly arranged misfit dislocations contribute to enhancing the strength and plasticity of the alloy, while twins in the matrix phase and coordinated dual-phase structures further improve mechanical properties.
