Yuqiang Sheng et al.

Summary: A highly crystalline perylene imide supramolecular photocatalyst (PDI-NH) with breakthrough oxygen evolution rate and high quantum yield was synthesized via the imidazole solvent method. The highly crystalline structure is achieved through ordered self-assembly in molten imidazole solvent through pi-pi stacking and hydrogen bonding. The excellent performance is attributed to the robust built-in electric field, which accelerates charge separation and transfer. Furthermore, the catalyst is highly stable and can be reused.

Electronic interaction between transition metal single-atoms and anatase TiO2 boosts CO2 photoreduction with H2O

Byoung-Hoon Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of transition metal single atoms on CO2 photoreduction on TiO2 photocatalysts, using a combination of material design, spectroscopic analyses, and theoretical studies. It was found that the electronic interaction between single Cu atoms and TiO2 affects the reducibility of the surface, leading to spontaneous formation of O vacancies near Cu atoms, which cooperatively stabilize CO2 intermediates. Optimized Cu-1/TiO2 photocatalysts exhibit a 66-fold enhancement in CO2 photoreduction performance compared to pristine TiO2, showing the importance of uniform distribution of single atoms in enhancing photocatalytic processes.

Flexible construct of N vacancies and hydrophobic sites on g-C3N4 by F doping and their contribution to PFOA degradation in photocatalytic ozonation

Zesen Chen et al.

Summary: Doping of F into g-C3N4 (CN) effectively regulated N vacancies, hydrophobic sites, and electron rich zone, leading to enhanced photocatalytic ozonation of PFOA. F-CN exhibited superior activity compared to CN, achieving 74.3% PFOA removal in F-CN/Vis/O3 compared to only 57.1% in CN/Vis/O3. The presence of N vacancies played a vital role in the oxidation of PFOA through photogenerated hole (hvb+) oxidation. The hydrophobic sites facilitated mass transfer and enhanced the generation of hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) through O3's single electron reduction, while reducing the recombination of hvb+-ecb-. The degradation of PFOA in F-CN/Vis/O3 involved the gradual shortening of perfluoroalkyl chain and loss of the CF2 unit.

Electron-phonon coupling-assisted universal red luminescence of o-phenylenediamine-based carbon dots

Boyang Wang et al.

Summary: The photoluminescence mechanism of carbon dots (CDs) remains unclear due to their complex core-shell structure and variety of surface functional groups. In this study, we prepared six different oPD-based CDs and found that they had almost the same PL emission and absorption spectra after purification. Structural and spectral characterization revealed similar carbon core structures but different surface polymer shells. Single-molecule PL spectroscopy confirmed that the multi-modal emission of those CDs originated from the transitions of different vibrational energy levels of the same PL center in the carbon core. Theoretical calculations provided insights into the potential polymerization mode and carbon core structure. Additionally, the phenomenon of spectral splitting of single-particle CDs was observed at low temperature, indicating their unique properties as both organic molecules and quantum dots.
