Phase stabilities and equilibria of the Ti-Al-Nb ternary system at intermediate temperatures I. The 900 °C isothermal section

Shuai Xu et al.

Summary: Determining the phase diagrams at intermediate temperatures for Ti-Al-Nb alloys is challenging due to various factors, but through diffusion simulation guidance, this study successfully constructed and characterized the phase diagrams for the system. The findings provide valuable insights for the development of Ti-Al-Nb alloys at intermediate temperatures.

Development of gamma titanium aluminide (γ-TiAl) alloys: A review

Ozge Genc et al.

Summary: Gamma titanium aluminides (γ-TiAl) are suitable for aerospace applications due to their high strength and low density at high temperatures. However, low ductility and fracture toughness at low temperatures limit their use. This study investigates the effect of additional alloying elements on improving the shortcomings of γ-TiAl alloy, resulting in improved microstructure and mechanical properties.

Phase Equilibria in the Ti-Rich Part of the Ti-Al-Nb System-Part I: Low-Temperature Phase Equilibria Between 700 and 900 °C

B. Distl et al.

Summary: Precise knowledge of the phase equilibria in the Ti-Al-Nb system between 700 and 900 degrees C is crucial for improving TiAl-based turbine materials and achieving further energy savings. The presence of ternary intermetallic phases omega(o) (Ti4NbAl3) and O (Ti2NbAl) at the relevant temperatures makes the phase relations complex. Through various experimental methods, the phase equilibria of the Ti-rich part of the Ti-Al-Nb system at 700, 800, and 900 degrees C were determined, providing valuable information for further research and development.

The crystal structure and transformations of the omicron phase O in the Ti-Al-Nb system and on the ambiguity of its subvariants O1 and O2

Shuai Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, the crystal structure, atom positions, and phase transformations of O-Ti2NbAl alloys were clarified using in-situ neutron diffraction and high-temperature X-ray diffraction methods. The research revealed a specific C m c m structure for the O phase, as well as the phase transformation sequences of Ti-24.8Al-24.3Nb alloy. Additionally, it was proven that the distinction between the omicron subvariants 01 and 02 is crystallographic nonsense.

Phase Equilibria in the Ti-Rich Part of the Ti-Al-Nb System-Part II: High-Temperature Phase Equilibria Between 1000 and 1300 °C

B. Distl et al.

Summary: The knowledge of phase equilibria in the Ti-Al-Nb system above 1000 degrees C is crucial for the manufacturing of TiAl-based parts for high-temperature structural applications. However, the phase diagrams reported in the literature are contradictory, especially regarding the extended homogeneity range of the cubic (beta Ti,Nb) phase and the position and extension of the high-temperature (alpha Ti) phase. In this study, a systematic reinvestigation of the phase equilibria in this system was conducted, resulting in an improved reaction scheme for the entire Ti-Al-Nb system.

Summary: The crystal structure, atom positions, and phase transformations of the Omicron phase were clarified in this study using in-situ neutron diffraction and high-temperature X-ray diffraction methods. The phase transformation sequences in the Ti-24.8Al-24.3Nb alloy were identified, and it was proven that the distinction of the omicron subvariants Omicron 1 and Omicron 2 is crystallographic nonsense.

Solid-Solid Phase Transformations and Their Kinetics in Ti-Al-Nb Alloys

Benedikt Distl et al.

Summary: Thermal analysis of 12 ternary Ti-Al-Nb alloys and one binary Ti-Al reveals insights into the kinetics of phase transformations, including second-order and three first-order transformations. The dependence of transformation temperatures on heating rate varies systematically with the complexity of the transformations, showing a nonlinear relationship in all cases that can be described by a model for solid-solid phase transformations.

Experimental Phase Equilibria and Isopleth Section of 8Nb-TiAl Alloys

Yong Xu et al.

Summary: The experimental determination of the 8Nb isopleth section of the Ti-Al-Nb system reveals deviations from the calculated thermodynamic results, with the ordered beta(o) phase transforming from the disordered beta/alpha phases over a large Al concentration range, and the omega(o) phase transforming from the highly ordered beta(o) phase. The transition of the omega(o) phase from the beta(o) phase is considered to be a further ordering process based on experimental detection.
