Stability evaluation and quantitative analysis of filmy cathode in solid oxide fuel cells under operating conditions

Ziwei Zheng et al.

Summary: Quantitative analysis of degradation mechanism is crucial for optimizing the stability of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) with interface-modified cathodes via the infiltration method. In this study, an anode-supported SOFC with a multifunction layer (MFL) cathode-infiltrated filmy La0.6Sr0.4CoO3-d (LSC) was prepared, which exhibited a peak power density of 1.1 W cm-2 at 750 degrees C and demonstrated outstanding durability with minimal voltage loss during long-term operation. The contribution of different electrode processes to voltage degradation was quantified using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and the distribution of relaxation time (DRT) and equivalent circuit model (ECM) methods. The dominant degradation mechanism was identified as the exacerbation of oxygen ionic transport and charge transfer at the MFL/electrolyte interface due to Sr enrichment.

Smart utilization of in-situ exsolution occurring in Ag doped PrBa0.5Sr0.5CO2O5+δ nanofiber air electrode of intermediate temperature reversible solid oxide cells

Lu Zou et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the fabrication of novel Pr0.9Ag0.1B0.5Sr0.5Co2O5+delta nanofibers with enhanced electrocatalytic activities for reversible solid oxide cells, improving their performance in low-temperature operation. The cells with the nanofibers air electrode exhibit decreased polarization resistance, increased electrolysis current density, and adequate power density at 700 degrees C, showing exceptional reversibility and stability. The enhancement is attributed to in-situ exsolution of Ag nanoparticles and better interface combination between the air electrode and electrolyte.

Boosting and Robust Multifunction Cathode Layer for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Ziwei Zheng et al.

Summary: Designing an efficient cathode and accelerating the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction process are crucial for enhancing electrochemical outputs in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). A novel multifunction layer cathode, combining a Gd0.2Ce0.8O2-delta (GDC) interlayer with a La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-delta (LSCF) cathode functional layer, is reported in this study. By precisely controlling the concentration of the infiltration precursor solution, discrete and filmy LSCF coatings on the GDC scaffold can be prepared, with the film-like coating exhibiting lower initial polarization impedance and better stability. The as-obtained SOFCs exhibit enhanced peak power density and long-term operation stability.
