Effects of a prolonged diet regimen on autophagic function in rat islets with aging

Zhao-Yan Gu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of long-term calorie-restricted or high-fat diets on the structure-function relationships and autophagy in the islets of aging rats. The results showed that aging and high-fat diets decreased the beta-cell-to-islet area ratio, disrupted islet structure, and reduced autophagy-related proteins. However, long-term calorie-restricted diets delayed islet aging and prevented the decline in autophagic function.

Effect of Insulin and Pioglitazone on Protein Phosphatase 2A Interaction Partners in Primary Human Skeletal Muscle Cells Derived from Obese Insulin-Resistant Participants

Lana Alghanem et al.

Summary: Skeletal muscle insulin resistance plays a major role in type-2 diabetes. This study aimed to investigate the protein-protein interactions involving protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) in lean insulin-sensitive and obese insulin-resistant participants. The results showed differential PP2Ac complexes in response to insulin and pioglitazone, with various enriched pathways and molecular functions. Pioglitazone restored some of these abnormalities.

HK2: a potential regulator of osteoarthritis via glycolytic and non-glycolytic pathways

Chuncha Bao et al.

Summary: This review explores the role and mechanism of glucose metabolism, specifically focusing on the involvement of hexokinase 2 (HK2), in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis (OA). Studies have shown that aerobic glycolysis plays a crucial role in OA, and HK2 is considered a key regulator of glucose metabolism. The elevated expression of HK2 in OA synovial tissue suggests its potential therapeutic effect in managing OA.

Summary: The groundbreaking research in Toronto from 2021 to 2022 led to the discovery of insulin, which changed the treatment of type 1 diabetes and initiated further studies on its purification, isolation, structural characterization, and genetic sequencing. The decision of the researchers not to profit financially from their discovery, but to make it accessible worldwide, has had a positive impact on the field of scientific discoveries.

Oxidized Pork Induces Disorders of Glucose Metabolism in Mice

Yueting Ge et al.

Summary: Consumption of pork with high levels of oxidative injury can lead to disorders of glucose metabolism in mice, characterized by hyperglycemia, hypoinsulinemia, impaired glucose tolerance, and impaired pancreatic insulin secretion. Protein oxidation plays a key role in this abnormal glucose metabolism induced by high oxidative injury pork intake.

The many actions of insulin in skeletal muscle, the paramount tissue determining glycemia

Lykke Sylow et al.

Summary: Skeletal muscle is crucial for insulin-stimulated glucose disposal and overall glycemic control. Insulin regulates glucose uptake in skeletal muscle through complex signaling cascades. Understanding insulin's actions in muscle can provide insights into addressing issues with glucose uptake in conditions like diabetes and obesity.

A High-Fat Diet Aggravates the Age-Related Decline in Skeletal Muscle Structure and Function

Hans Degens et al.

Summary: The age-related decline in muscle function is worsened by a high-fat diet-induced increase in fat mass. It is hypothesized that an HFD leads to quicker accumulation of IMCL in old individuals compared to young-adult individuals, resulting in earlier onset of muscle dysfunction. Methionine restriction enhances mitochondrial biogenesis and shows promise in combating obesity across all ages.
