Rice metabolic regulatory network spanning the entire life cycle

Chenkun Yang et al.

Summary: This study identified 825 annotated metabolites using targeted and non-targeted metabolite profiling methods in rice samples from different tissues throughout the entire life cycle. A Rice Metabolic Regulation Network was constructed by combining these data with transcriptome data. The metabolites and co-expressed genes were divided into 12 clusters based on their accumulation patterns, providing a comprehensive metabolic profile of the rice life cycle. Novel transcription factors were identified using known regulatory genes and tissue specificity. The study demonstrates the importance of analyzing metabolome and transcriptome data in understanding agronomic traits.

Flavonoid mediated selective cross-talk between plants and beneficial soil microbiome

Sagar Bag et al.

Summary: Plants produce various organic compounds during different growth phases, including primary and secondary metabolites. Secondary metabolites play important roles in plants' adaptation to changing environments and stress management. Plants also allocate some of their photosynthesized carbon as secondary metabolites to establish symbiotic relationships with soil microorganisms. It is crucial to identify specific metabolites that can distinguish beneficial and pathogenic microorganisms in the soil. A detailed understanding of the interactions between metabolite structures and beneficial microorganisms could have significant implications for ecology and agricultural research. Flavonoids are used as examples of secondary metabolites in this study to demonstrate recent advancements in controlling these valuable metabolites at different levels. Most of the research focuses on plant flavonoids, which protect the host plant against competitors or predators and have ecological implications. This review aims to summarize the wide range of functional and signaling activities of secondary metabolites, especially flavonoids, in the selective cross-talk between plants and their beneficial soil microbiome. Recent advances in understanding the interactions between plant species and their rhizosphere microbiomes through root exudates (flavonoids) are highlighted.

Overexpression of a Gene Encoding Trigonelline Synthase from Areca catechu L. Promotes Drought Resilience in Transgenic Arabidopsis

Yilin Li et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the physiological responses of areca seedlings to drought stress and found that drought caused leaf yellowing and changes in chlorophyll fluorescence parameters. We also observed increased levels of proline and trigonelline in response to drought. Through bioinformatic analysis, we identified the gene encoding areca trigonelline synthase and demonstrated its importance in improving drought tolerance in transgenic Arabidopsis.

Unravelling the consecutive glycosylation and methylation of flavonols in peach in response to UV-B irradiation

Linfeng Xie et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanisms of glycosylation and methylation of flavonol glycosides, particularly the formation of flavonol diglycosides. By studying the response of peach flowers and fruit to UV-B irradiation, several key biosynthetic genes were identified, and their enzymatic activities and specificity were confirmed. These findings provide important insights into the metabolic engineering of complex flavonol glycosides in the future.

Identification of Specific Glycosyltransferases Involved in Flavonol Glucoside Biosynthesis in Ginseng Using Integrative Metabolite Profiles, DIA Proteomics, and Phylogenetic Analysis

Qinggang Yin et al.

Summary: The study identified panasenoside and kaempferol 3-O-glucoside as commonly accumulated flavonol glycosides in ginseng leaves with cultivation years. A total of 50 UDP-glycosyltransferases (UGTs) were screened out to explore flavonol glycosylation in ginseng, with specific UGTs identified for the formation and modification of kaempferol 3-O-glucoside. The study highlights the significance of integrated metabolite profiles, proteomics, and phylogenetic analysis in understanding flavonol glycosylation pathways in ginseng.

Identifying new compounds with potential pharmaceutical and physiological activity in Areca catechu and Areca triandra via a non-targeted metabolomic approach

Jiao Wu et al.

Summary: This study identified a total of 791 metabolites, with 115 metabolites mapped to 44 KEGG metabolic pathways and 154 metabolites showing significantly different levels in A. catechu compared to A. triandra. Several components with known biological activities were identified for the first time in A. catechu and A. triandra, showing similar abundance between the two species but significant differences between the pericarp and seeds of A. catechu fruits. These findings suggest that Areca species have similar primary and secondary metabolites, making them valuable sources for traditional medicine and potential further studies on pharmaceutical and physiological effects.
