Nano-Selenium Antagonized Cadmium-Induced Liver Fibrosis in Chicken

Xiao-Han Sun et al.

Summary: This study determined the mechanism of nano-Se antagonism in Cd-induced hepatocyte pyroptosis by targeting the APJAMPK-PGC1 alpha pathway. The results showed that Cd activated the NLRP3 inflammasome and caused hepatocyte pyroptosis. Furthermore, Cd also increased hepatic fibrosis. However, the co-treatment of nano-Se and Cd significantly reduced the degree of fibrosis.

Cadmium induced Fak-mediated anoikis activation in kidney via nuclear receptors (AHR/CAR/PXR)-mediated xenobiotic detoxification pathway

Jing Ge et al.

Summary: Cadmium is a toxic heavy metal that poses a threat to food safety and human health. This study investigated the mechanisms of cadmium-induced kidney damage and the detoxification response. The results showed that cadmium exposure caused renal injuries and affected detoxification enzyme activities. These findings contribute to our understanding of the toxicity and detoxification mechanisms of cadmium.

A novel role of Nano selenium and sildenafil on streptozotocin-induced diabetic nephropathy in rats by modulation of inflammatory, oxidative, and apoptotic pathways

Mona F. El-Azab et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of nano selenium, sildenafil, and their combination on inflammation, oxidative stress, and apoptosis in streptozotocin-induced diabetic nephropathy in rats. The results showed that both nano selenium and sildenafil had beneficial effects on kidney function and histopathological changes, and these effects were supported by biochemical and molecular docking assays. The study highlighted the potential anti-inflammatory pathway of sildenafil as a high-mobility group box (HMGB1) inhibitor.

Cadmium Through Disturbing MTF1-Mediated Metal Response Induced Cerebellar Injury

Shao-Shuai Bi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of chronic cadmium exposure on the cerebellum of chickens. Cadmium disturbed metal homeostasis and induced oxidative stress in the cerebellum, leading to neuronal damage. Low-dose cadmium exposure activated cellular adaptive responses, while high-dose cadmium inhibited these responses.

Cadmium-induced dysfunction of the blood-brain barrier depends on ROS-mediated inhibition of PTPase activity in zebrafish

Tao Zhang et al.

Summary: Accumulation of cadmium in the blood increases the risk of neurological diseases, but the mechanism of how cadmium crosses the blood-brain barrier is unclear. Studies have shown that cadmium chloride can affect the development and function of the BBB in zebrafish, leading to cerebral hemorrhage, increased permeability, and abnormal vascular formation, as well as disrupting cell-cell junctional morphology.

Comparison of nanoparticle-selenium, selenium-enriched yeast and sodium selenite on the alleviation of cadmium-induced inflammation via NF-kB/IκB pathway in heart

Jing Ge et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the superior antagonistic effects of Nano-Se, SeY, and SSe on Cd-induced inflammation response through the NF-kB/I kappa B pathway in the heart. Results demonstrated that Nano-Se was more effective in reversing Cd-induced histopathological changes and iNOS activities, reducing Cd accumulation, and antagonizing Cd-triggered inflammation response in chicken hearts compared to SeY and SSe. Se applications, especially Nano-Se, can be most efficiently used for relieving cardiotoxicity induced by Cd exposure.
