Prebiotic inulin as a treatment of obesity related nonalcoholic fatty liver disease through gut microbiota: a critical review

Yaolian Hu et al.

Summary: Microbial-derived products participate in the regulation of hepatic lipid metabolism, and prebiotics can control body weight and alleviate hepatic fat accumulation by modulating the microbial community structure. Individual differences in host response to prebiotic treatment may be due to the multiple relationships among bacterial species and their ability to degrade inulin. Therefore, analyzing the composition and function of initial gut microbiota is essential for improving the efficacy of prebiotic supplementation.

Pomegranate peel polyphenols interaction with intestinal flora and its metabolic transformation

Haidan Shi et al.

Summary: Pomegranate peel polyphenols (PPPs) have various effects such as anti-oxidation, anti-atherosclerosis, and anti-obesity. However, there is limited research on the absorption and transformation of these polyphenols in the gut and their biologically active forms. This study investigated the relationship between intestinal flora and polyphenol metabolism of pomegranate peel, specifically focusing on the metabolite urolithin in rats. The results demonstrated that changes in gut bacteria diversity can impact the abundance of PPPs metabolites, and PPPs can modulate the intestinal flora structure and promote the production of certain acids. Additionally, specific bacterial groups were found to enhance the metabolic transformation of PPPs.

Potential mechanisms underlying the ameliorative effect of Lactobacillus paracasei FZU103 on the lipid metabolism in hyperlipidemic mice fed a high-fat diet

Xu-Cong Lv et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that Lactobacillus paracasei FZU103 can effectively improve hepatic lipid accumulation caused by a high-fat diet, reduce body weight and fat tissue, improve biochemical parameters, promote bile acid excretion, and influence the composition of intestinal microbiota.

Gut microbiota from green tea polyphenol-dosed mice improves intestinal epithelial homeostasis and ameliorates experimental colitis

Zhenhua Wu et al.

Summary: The study found that oral EGCG helps alleviate colonic inflammation by increasing the abundance of Akkermansia, a short-chain fatty acids-producing bacteria, and promoting SCFAs production. Prophylactic supplementation of EGCG also showed beneficial outcomes. FMT experiments confirmed the role of EGCG in attenuating colitis.
