Magnitude and associated factors of suicidal ideation and attempt among people with epilepsy attending outpatient treatment at primary public hospitals in northwest Ethiopia: a multicentre cross-sectional study

Summary: This study found a high prevalence of suicidal ideation and attempt among people with epilepsy attending outpatient treatment at primary public hospitals in northwest Ethiopia. Factors associated with suicidal ideation included being female, living alone, having depression and anxiety, being single, divorced or widowed, family history of suicidal attempt, and poor social support. Factors associated with suicidal attempts included depression, living alone, family history of suicide attempt, taking medication for mental illness, and hazardous alcohol use. Early screening, detection, and management of suicide in people with epilepsy are recommended based on the study findings.

Summary: This study assessed the magnitude and associated factors of suicidal ideation among cancer patients in Ethiopia, with a prevalence of 28.5%. Factors significantly associated with suicidal ideation included being female, in advanced cancer stage, perceived stigma, and anxiety. The study highlights the need for special attention to address suicidal ideation among cancer patients.

Experiences with a violence and mental health safety protocol for a randomized controlled trial to support youth living with HIV

Summary: This study implemented a safety protocol within an HIV clinic-based research study in Ndola, Zambia, aiming to help youth living with HIV to address violence and mental health issues by referring them to healthcare providers. Nearly half of the surveyed youth were referred to healthcare providers, with most feeling encouraged and helped by the protocol, although challenges such as youth reluctance to open up, resource constraints, and cultural norms were identified.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of a problem-solving therapy (PST) intervention delivered by community health volunteers (CHVs) through a mobile application in Kenya, showing significant improvements in mental health symptoms. Prevalence of suicidal ideation and attempted suicide in the general population of Ethiopia: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: This study aimed to determine the pooled prevalence of suicide ideation and suicidal attempt in the general population of Ethiopia. The results showed that the 12-month pooled prevalence of suicidal ideation was 9% and attempted suicide was 4%, with evidence of significant heterogeneity. Subgroup analysis did not identify the source of heterogeneity, and sensitivity analysis showed that the point estimates were within the overall confidence interval for suicidal ideation and attempted suicide. No evidence of publication bias was found for both outcomes.

Summary: The study found high prevalence of suicidal ideation and attempt among people living with HIV/AIDS in Africa, especially in Ethiopia and Nigeria. Suicidal ideation and attempt were strongly associated with factors such as advanced stages of AIDS, co-morbid depression, perceived HIV stigma, and poor social support.
