Unmet needs, limited access: A qualitative study of postpartum health care experiences of people with disabilities

Depressive symptoms during the perinatal period by disability status: Findings from the United States Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System

Summary: This study aimed to compare the prevalence of depressive symptoms during the perinatal period between individuals with disabilities and those without disabilities. The results of the analysis of nationally representative data from 24 participating states in the United States between 2018 and 2020 showed that respondents with disabilities had a higher prevalence of depressive symptoms during pregnancy and the postpartum period compared to those without disabilities. This increased risk of depressive symptoms among individuals with disabilities during the perinatal period can have adverse effects on maternal, neonatal, and infant health outcomes.

A qualitative exploration of autistic mothers' experiences II: Childbirth and postnatal experiences

Summary: Research showed that autistic participants may face sensory challenges during childbirth, highlighting the need for sensory adjustments and clear communication from healthcare professionals. Limited knowledge of autism among professionals could hinder the provision of appropriate adjustments. Both autistic and non-autistic participants reported parenting strengths and challenges, suggesting potential improvements in childbirth and postnatal healthcare for autistic individuals through sensory and communication adjustments, as well as increased autism-related training for professionals.

Experiences of women with physical disabilities accessing prenatal care in low- and middle-income countries

Summary: Women with physical disabilities face barriers to accessing patient-centered and accommodative care during the prenatal and childbirth periods. Research has found that they experience limited resources, lack of knowledge and skills among healthcare workers, lack of knowledge among pregnant individuals, and public stigma and ignorance. These findings provide opportunities for improving prenatal care and childbirth services for these vulnerable women.

Health and Well-Being among Women with Physical Disabilities After Childbirth: An Exploratory Study

Experiences of Breastfeeding among Disabled Women

Summary: Research on breastfeeding experiences of disabled women revealed unique challenges in communication with lactation consultants, milk supply and latch problems, intense pressure to breastfeed, and interactions with health care providers. This study suggests that disabled women should be better supported in their breastfeeding decisions and require greater access to disability-affirmative resources and accessible communication.
