Drug Overdose Mortality Among People Experiencing Homelessness, 2003 to 2018

Danielle R. Fine et al.

Summary: Despite high rates of drug overdose death among people experiencing homelessness, patterns in drug overdose mortality, including the types of drugs implicated in overdose deaths, remain understudied in this population. In this cohort study of people experiencing homelessness, drug overdose accounted for 1 in 4 deaths, with synthetic opioid and polysubstance involvement becoming predominant contributors to mortality in recent years. These findings emphasize the importance of increasing access to evidence-based opioid overdose prevention strategies and opioid use disorder treatment among people experiencing homelessness, while highlighting the need to address both intentional and unintentional polysubstance use in this population.

Using Point-in-Time Homeless Counts to Monitor Mortality Trends Among People Experiencing Homelessness in Los Angeles County, California, 2015-2019

Will Nicholas et al.

Summary: Mortality rates among people experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles County increased from 2015 to 2019, with drug overdose being the leading cause of death. Mortality rate ratios were higher for White individuals compared to Black and Latino individuals experiencing homelessness. Crude mortality rates and all-cause MRRs from comparison cohort studies were similar to those in the current study, indicating the need for further research and interventions in reducing mortality rates among homeless populations.

Opioid use disorder treatment for people experiencing homelessness: A scoping review

Matthew F. McLaughlin et al.

Summary: These studies suggest that individuals experiencing homelessness face more barriers to OUD treatment compared to their housed counterparts, with a higher likelihood of utilizing inpatient and detoxification treatment rather than pharmacotherapy. However, the literature review indicates that once engaged in pharmacotherapy, individuals experiencing homelessness have similar outcomes. Effective interventions for this population are low-barrier and targeted, with housing interventions showing benefits.

Early innovations in opioid use disorder treatment and harm reduction during the COVID-19 pandemic: a scoping review

Noa Krawczyk et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has presented challenges for people who use opioids, but it has also accelerated innovations in treatment and harm reduction services, including expanded use of telehealth services, increased take-home medication allowances, and broader uptake of long-acting opioid medications. These innovations highlight patient-centered and feasible approaches for mitigating harms related to OUD.

Marc R. Larochelle et al.

Summary: The study found that opioid overdose death rates remained stable from 2018 to 2019 across 67 HEALing Communities Study communities, with a significant increase among non-Hispanic Black individuals. An anti-racist public health approach is needed to address this crisis of opioid-related harms.

Factors That Affect Patient Attrition in Buprenorphine Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder: A Retrospective Real-World Study Using Electronic Health Records

Sheryl Ker et al.

Summary: The study examined attrition patterns among opioid use disorder (OUD) patients treated with buprenorphine (BUP) in various settings, showing higher retention rates for patients in outpatient settings, particularly among females, whites, milder cases, and those not using non-psychotropic medications. Predictive modeling revealed that factors such as higher global assessment of functioning, lower OUD severity, higher initial BUP dose, outpatient BUP initiation, and fewer psychotropic medications were associated with longer retentions, with the model accurately identifying 75.2% of patients who left treatment within three months with a precision of 90.5%.
