Satellite Remote Sensing of Global Land Surface Temperature: Definition, Methods, Products, and Applications

Zhao-Liang Li et al.

Summary: Land surface temperature (LST) is a crucial parameter that reflects land-atmosphere interaction. This review summarizes the progress in LST estimation algorithms and provides an comprehensive collection of widely used LST products. It also addresses the problems related to current LST products and introduces effective methods to overcome these challenges. The development of spatiotemporal seamless LST data significantly promotes the application of LST products in various fields.

A physical method for downscaling land surface temperatures using surface energy balance theory

Yongxin Hu et al.

Summary: Fine-resolution land surface temperature (LST) derived from thermal infrared remote sensing images is a good indicator of surface water status and plays an essential role in the exchange of energy and water between land and atmosphere. A physical surface energy balance (SEB)-based LST downscaling method (DTsEB) is developed to downscale coarse remotely sensed thermal infrared LST products with fine-resolution visible and near-infrared data. The DTsEB method is advantageous for its ability to mechanically interrelate surface variables contributing to the spatial variation of LST, to quantitatively weigh the contributions of each related variable within a physical framework, and to efficaciously avoid the subjective selection of scaling factors and the establishment of statistical regression relationships.

Global estimates of 500 m daily aerodynamic roughness length from MODIS data

Zhong Peng et al.

Summary: This study presented a practical method for global estimates of 500m daily z0(m) using machine learning techniques, wind profile equation, observations, and MODIS data. The random forest model outperformed deep neural network and convolutional neural network models, showing high accuracy in reproducing daily z0(m) across all land cover types. These results can assist in improving the simulation of momentum, water, and energy transfer between land and atmosphere, enhancing the development of high-resolution land surface and Earth system models.

A moisture-based triangle approach for estimating surface evaporative fraction with time-series of remotely sensed data

Ronglin Tang et al.

Summary: Evapotranspiration is a key process for water and heat transfer between land and atmosphere. This study introduces a new moisture-based triangle method to estimate regional evapotranspiration more accurately. By utilizing time-series slope, the wet and dry edges of the new triangle are determined. The results demonstrate that this method outperforms the traditional temperature-based triangle.

Completing the machine learning saga in fractional snow cover estimation from MODIS Terra reflectance data: Random forests versus support vector regression

Semih Kuter

Summary: This study investigates the suitability of two frequently employed machine learning algorithms, random forests (RFs) and support vector regression (SVR), for fractional snow cover (FSC) estimation from MODIS Terra data, comparing them with previously proposed artificial neural networks (ANNs) and multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) methods over complex alpine terrain. The results indicate high consistency of the RF, SVR, ANN, and MARS models with reference FSC values, showing low RMSE and high R values. Additionally, the models trained without three auxiliary variables show slight differences but still perform well in solving complex functional dependencies using only MODIS reflectance data.
