Advanced performance and ultra-high, long-term durability of acid-base blended membranes over 900 hours containing sulfonated PEEK and quaternized poly(arylene ether sulfone) in H2/O2 fuel cells

Ae Rhan Kim et al.

Summary: A quaternized poly (arylene ether sulfone) (QNPAES) was synthesized and a blended membrane composed of sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) was developed. The mechanical strength, proton conductivity, and physicochemical properties of the mixed membrane were significantly improved by adding an appropriate amount of QNPAES (6 wt%). The PEMFC performance and durability of the mixed membrane were also greatly enhanced at 20% RH.

Development of High-Performance Hydrogen-Air Fuel Cell with Flourine-Free Sulfonated Co-Polynaphthoyleneimide Membrane

Ulyana M. Zavorotnaya et al.

Summary: This paper presents research on the technological development of hydrogen-air fuel cells with high output power characteristics using fluorine-free co-polynaphtoyleneimide (co-PNIS) membranes. It is found that the optimal operating temperature of a fuel cell based on a co-PNIS membrane with the hydrophilic/hydrophobic blocks = 70/30 composition is in the range of 60-65 degrees C. The maximum output power of a membrane-electrode assembly (MEA), created according to the developed technology, is 535 mW/cm(2), and the working power (at the cell voltage of 0.6 V) is 415 mW/cm(2). A comparison with similar characteristics of MEAs based on a commercial Nafion 212 membrane shows that the values of operating performance are almost the same, and the maximum MEA output power of a fluorine-free membrane is only similar to 20% lower. It was concluded that the developed technology allows one to create competitive fuel cells based on a fluorine-free, cost-effective co-polynaphthoyleneimide membrane.

Enhanced performance and durability of composite membranes containing anatase titanium oxide for fuel cells operating under low relative humidity

Ae Rhan Kim et al.

Summary: The study prepared a series of composite membranes by doping different proportions of S-An-TiO2, revealing that 15wt% S-An-TiO2 significantly enhanced the performance of the composite membrane. Under continuous 60°C and 20% relative humidity conditions, the 1.5 wt% SDBC/S-An-TiO2 composite membrane exhibited high current output, power output, and durability.

Summary: This study incorporated CeO2-ATiO(2) as a bifunctional filler in SPEEK, resulting in a nanocomposite membrane with improved performance. The addition of CeO2-ATiO(2) enhanced the proton conductivity of SPEEK under low humidity conditions. The SPEEK/CeO2-ATiO(2) nanocomposite membranes demonstrated improved physicochemical and thermomechanical properties, as well as excellent durability and enhanced electrochemical performance.

Water Sorption by Polyheteroarylenes

Anatoly E. Chalykh et al.

Summary: The sorption-diffusion characteristics of rigid-chain glassy polymers based on polyheteroarylenes (PHAs) were studied experimentally. The results showed that water molecules were strongly sorbed by the polymer, and the diffusion coefficients of water increased slightly with temperature, which could be described by the Arrhenius equation.

Diffusion in Sulfonated Co-Polynaphthoyleneimide Proton Exchange Membranes with Different Ratios of Hydrophylic to Hydrophobic Groups Studied Using SFG NMR

Ulyana M. Zavorotnaya et al.

Summary: In this study, static field gradient (SFG) NMR was used to measure the self-diffusion coefficients of protons in fluorine-free sulfonated co-polynaphthoyleneimide (co-PNIS) proton exchange membranes. It was found that proton diffusion was practically isotropic and showed two activation regimes, with a crossover point near 260 K. The activation energy above the crossover was close to that of Nafion 212, while below the crossover, all co-PNIS membranes had similar diffusion coefficients and higher activation energy compared to Nafion. Increasing the ratio of hydrophilic to hydrophobic polymer groups resulted in faster diffusion in the temperature range from 273 to 355 K. The diffusion of co-PNIS membranes did not depend on the length scale of the experiment, indicating a different morphology compared to Nafion membranes.

Effects of Oversaturated Cathode Humidity Conditions on the Performance Degradation of PEMFCs and Diagnostic Signals of Warburg Impedance under Low Humidity Conditions

JunHwa Kwon et al.

Summary: This study focuses on collateral anode degradation of a stationary PEMFC operating under cathode flooding conditions with an oversaturated cathode at 150% relative humidity. By using low-humidity electrochemical impedance spectroscopy as a fault identification method, degradation of the MEA can be detected before severe cell deterioration. An analysis of the malfunctioning anode reaction and proton conductivity enables monitoring of the sequential degradation of an MEA.
