Photon- counting detector CT: early clinical experience review

Thomas Sartoretti et al.

Summary: Since the 1970s, X-ray CT has become a significant diagnostic imaging technology in modern medicine, thanks to technological advances improving image quality and diagnostic value. Photon-counting detector (PCD)-CT, a novel technology, has emerged with the potential to overcome limitations of current CT systems and offer improved capabilities. This review summarizes the first clinical experience of PCD-CT, focusing on recent prototypes and clinically approved systems, presenting initial publications and corresponding clinical cases.

High-Pitch Photon-Counting Detector Computed Tomography Angiography of the Aorta Intraindividual Comparison to Energy-Integrating Detector Computed Tomography at Equal Radiation Dose

Andre Euler et al.

Summary: The study aimed to compare the objective and subjective image quality of high-pitch PCD-CT and conventional EID-CT of the aorta at the same radiation dose. The results showed that high-pitch PCD-CT with VMI at 40 and 45 keV had significantly higher CNR compared to EID-CT with ATVS at matched radiation dose. The CNR gain of PCD-CT was more pronounced in overweight patients. A trade-off between objective and subjective image quality was found with VMI at 45 to 50 keV.

Ultra-High-Resolution Coronary CT Angiography With Photon-Counting Detector CT Feasibility and Image Characterization

Victor Mergen et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the feasibility and quality of ultra-high-resolution CCTA with PCD-CT in patients with high coronary calcium load, showing that ultra-high-resolution CCTA was feasible in all patients and provided excellent image quality with high sharpness and reduced blooming.
