Carer burden and behavioral disturbance is similar between younger-onset Alzheimer's disease and behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia

Time to diagnosis in younger-onset dementia and the impact of a specialist diagnostic service

Summary: This study identified predictors of delay to diagnosis in people with younger-onset dementia (YOD) and found that younger age at onset, dementia type other than Alzheimer's disease (AD) and behavioral-variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), and increased number of services consulted were significant predictors of diagnostic delay. Additionally, the study showed that a specialist YOD service can reduce time to diagnosis, highlighting the importance of such service in reducing diagnostic delay and providing post-diagnostic support.

Summary: This narrative paper describes the influences behind the development of, and key components of a specialist younger-onset dementia service located in metropolitan Victoria, Australia. The Melbourne Young-Onset Dementia Service was established in 2013 and provides diagnosis and ongoing care for people with younger-onset dementia and their families, through collaboration with other medical units, allied health and community services. It is potentially a model for other younger-onset dementia services nationally and internationally.

A transdiagnostic review of neuroimaging studies of apathy and disinhibition in dementia

Determinants of Caregiver Burden in Early-Onset Dementia

Summary: The study found that caregiver burden is positively related to factors such as caregiver sex, spousal relationship to the patient, severity of patient's behavioral symptoms, diagnostic delay, and financial distress of the family, while negatively related to factors such as disease duration, patient's education, region of birth, caregiver age, number of caregiver's days off work, number of offspring, and caregiver perception of patient's quality of life. The level of caregiver psychological distress completely mediated the impact of factors like patient's disease duration, being a wife caregiver, financial distress, and number of caregiver's days off work on caregiver burden.
