Evaluation of Fuel and Air Mixing in a Scramjet Engine Using an Asymmetric Strut-Based Fuel Injection Using CFD

Tushar Kant Swain et al.

Summary: This paper proposes and investigates a new asymmetric strut-based fuel injection for enhanced fuel-air mixing and combustion in supersonic combustors. The asymmetry in the strut creates vortices along the Z-axis, resulting in improved mixing. The presence of vortices significantly increases the mixing and combustion efficiency.

The non-reacting flow characteristics of pylon and wall injections in a dual combustion ramjet engine

J. Sarathkumar Sebastin et al.

Summary: The influence of pylon and wall injection on coaxial jets in a Dual Combustion Ramjet engine has been numerically investigated. Pylon injection provides better spatial distribution of fuel but results in higher total pressure loss within the supersonic combustor compared to wall injection. The study validated the numerical analysis with experimental data and observed shock wave interactions within the combustor.

The numerical investigation of combustion performance of scramjet combustor with variation in angle of attack

Kumari Ambe Verma et al.

Summary: This article involves a computational investigation of a parallel fuel injection based scramjet combustor. By validating the selected geometry and changing the angle of attack of the incoming air, the variations in combustion efficiency are analyzed. The study results indicate that the performance of the scramjet combustor is primarily influenced by the geometry configuration and the nature of flow of incoming air.

Numerical Study on the Effect of Jet on the Operation of Powder Fuel Scramjet

H. M. Ding et al.

Summary: Metal powder fuel is an excellent power fuel for future hypersonic aircraft due to its high energy and volume calorific values. Introducing a primary jet upstream of the powder fuel inlet can effectively improve the mixing degree of fuel and air, and prolong the residence time of particles in the combustion chamber. However, increasing the mass flow rate of the primary jet results in a peak and subsequent decrease in combustion efficiency and engine thrust.

Hydrogen fueled scramjet combustor with a wavy-wall double strut fuel injector

Obula Reddy Kummitha et al.

Summary: The global demand for enhanced scramjet engine performance is increasing, with the main challenge being the mixing of fuel and air. Research has shown that using a wavy wall surface and double strut fuel injector can significantly improve mixing efficiency and combustion phenomenon.

The Combustion Characteristics of Double Ramps in a Strut-Based Scramjet Combustor

A. Antony Athithan et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the influence of ramps located upstream of a strut-based scramjet combustor under reacting flow conditions. The numerical results are validated with experimental values, showing compliance within the range, and the shock reflection due to the ramps enhances hydrogen distribution in the spatial direction, while lowering the combustion ignition delay time.

Experimental study of kerosene supersonic combustion with pilot hydrogen and fuel additive under low flight mach conditions

Feiteng Luo et al.

Summary: This paper experimentally studied liquid kerosene ignition and combustion with pilot hydrogen and fuel additive in a model supersonic combustor under simulated conditions of flight Mach 3.8-4.0. It was found that an appropriate amount of fuel additive can significantly enhance kerosene supersonic combustion and temperature rises, leading to mode transition from transonic to subsonic. The concentration of additive and hydrogen addition play important roles in improving combustor performance, while excessive amounts may lower combustion efficiency.

Significance of fluid flow characteristics in the hydrogen-fuelled scramjet combustor using flame stabilisation analysis

S. K. Gugulothu

Summary: Research on fluid flow dynamics of supersonic combustion ramjet engines focuses on improving combustion efficiency by studying the effects of injection temperature, wall pressure, formation of compressed wave train, and different modes of fuel injection. Transition to desired mode can be achieved through enhancement of injection pressure and reduction of temperature, whereas transverse injection of fuel may reduce combustion efficiency and hinder mode transition during horizontal injection.
