Mixed displacement-pressure-phase field framework for finite strain fracture of nearly incompressible hyperelastic materials

Fucheng Tian et al.

Summary: The favored phase field method (PFM) faces challenges in the finite strain fracture modeling of nearly or truly incompressible hyperelastic materials. The contradiction between incompressibility and smeared crack opening is resolved by loosening the incompressible constraint of the damaged phase while maintaining the incompressibility of intact material. A novel mixed formulation is derived and validated through numerical examples. The Q1/P0 formulation is found to be a better choice for finite strain fracture in nearly incompressible cases. The proposed framework and methodology show potential in simulating complex peeling and tearing problems.

Stabilized formulation for phase-field fracture in nearly incompressible hyperelasticity

Ida Ang et al.

Summary: This work presents a stabilized formulation for phase-field fracture of hyperelastic materials near the limit of incompressibility. The formulation combines a mixed displacement and pressure formulation with a perturbed Lagrangian formulation and utilizes a mesh-dependent stabilization technique. The results show good agreement with analytical solutions for crack tip opening displacements and perform well at the limit of incompressibility.

A graded interphase enhanced phase-field approach for modeling fracture in polymer composites

Paras Kumar et al.

Summary: Nanosized filler particles are found to be superior to microsized ones in improving the elastic and fracture behavior of polymers. Traditional sharp crack modeling approaches are limited in handling complex crack topologies, while phase-field fracture approaches offer an attractive alternative. Standard two-phase continuum models fail to capture the smaller is stronger size effect, so a graded interphase based enhancement is introduced. The present contribution extends the idea of graded interphases to the phase-field fracture approach, and the optimal combination of graded interphase parameters leads to a tougher macroscopic response.

On the Performance of Isotropic Hyperelastic Constitutive Models for Rubber-Like Materials: A State of the Art Review

Husnu Dal et al.

Summary: This study reviewed 44 hyperelastic constitutive models for elastomers and utilized a novel parameter identification methodology based on various multi-objective optimization strategies. The research assessed the strength and weaknesses of these models under different deformation conditions and sorted them based on their fitting performance to experimental data. The findings suggest that selecting an appropriate constitutive model for specific rubber compounds and applications remains a challenging task for engineers.

Phase field modeling of dielectric breakdown of ferroelectric polymers subjected to mechanical and electrical loadings

Zhang Mi et al.

Summary: A phase field model was developed to investigate the dielectric breakdown of ferroelectric polymers under mechanical and electrical loadings. The simulations showed that compressive stress restrains the branching of the breakdown path and increases the critical electric field of breakdown, while tensile stress accelerates the branching of the breakdown path and decreases the critical electric field of breakdown. These results may lead to further experimental investigations on the effect of mechanical stresses on the dielectric breakdown of ferroelectric polymers.

The Use of Contravariant Tensors to Model Anisotropic Soft Tissues

Arthesh Basak et al.

Summary: Biological tissues exhibit isotropic behavior at lower strain values, but show anisotropic behavior at higher strains as fibers straighten and bear load. This anisotropy can be mathematically modeled by considering the strains experienced by fibers. It is found that fibers have an oblique mean orientation around physiological loading directions, requiring a mathematical framework with tensors defined in a nonorthogonal basis to capture the direction-dependent response.

A finite deformation phase-field fracture model for the thermo-viscoelastic analysis of polymer nanocomposites

Behrouz Arash et al.

Summary: A finite deformation phase-field fracture model was developed to analyze the thermo-viscoelastic behavior of boehmite nanoparticle/epoxy nanocomposites, considering rate-dependent fracture evolution and the effect of nanoparticle contents and temperature on fracture behavior. The model's predictive capability was validated through comparing numerical results with experimental data, and numerical simulations were performed to study the effect of temperature and deformation rate on the force-displacement response of the nanocomposites in compact-tension tests.

An energetically consistent tension-compression split for phase-field models of fracture at large deformations

Shreeraman Swamynathan et al.

Summary: Research on predictive description of fracture is important, and the phase-field approach has proven to be efficient and versatile in handling crack patterns. However, distinguishing between tensile and compressive states in energetically driven crack evolution remains a challenge. A novel methodology for splitting energy-density functions is proposed in this study, with validation through numerical examples involving small and large deformations.
