GPU-based discrete element model of realistic non-convex aggregates: Mesoscopic insights into ITZ volume fraction and diffusivity of concrete

Wenxiang Xu et al.

Summary: In this research, a mathematical-controllable parameterized method is proposed to design three-dimensional non-convex aggregates, and a GPU-based discrete element modelling (DEM) is developed to generate polydisperse non-convex aggregates. A three-phase concrete mesostructure containing non-convex aggregates and interfacial transition zones (ITZs) is established, and the ITZ volume fraction is obtained by a Monte Carlo random point sampling method. Finally, a dual-probability Brownian motion (DP-BM) scheme is developed to evaluate the effective diffusivity of concrete. The effects of various factors on the ITZ volume fraction and concrete diffusivity are investigated to understand the component-structure-property relations for concrete. This research provides a comprehensive numerical framework for mesostructure characterization and diffusivity evaluation, which can be valuable for durability assessment of concrete.

Packing Fraction, Tortuosity, and Permeability of Granular-Porous Media With Densely Packed Spheroidal Particles: Monodisperse and Polydisperse Systems

Wenxiang Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of the geometrical and topological configurations of particles on the pore tortuosity and permeability of granular-porous media is investigated. A relaxation iteration scheme and a direction-guided rapidly exploring random tree algorithm are developed to study the effects of particle shape, fineness, and size distribution on the random packing fraction of particles. By comparing with experimental, theoretical, and numerical results, the proposed methods accurately predict the tortuosity and permeability. Furthermore, the impact of particle packing fraction, shape, fineness, and size distribution on the pore tortuosity and permeability is evaluated. The results have important implications for various scientific disciplines, including the properties of rocks, sandstones, and soils, as well as the design of ultra-high performance concrete.

A micromechanical framework for thermo-elastic properties of multiphase cementitious composites with different saturation

Weiqi Guo et al.

Summary: Understanding the thermo-elastic properties of cementitious composites with different saturation degrees is important for their durability in various hydraulic environments. This study proposes a micromechanical framework to predict these properties by considering the composition and structure of the composite at a microscopic scale. The framework proves to be reliable in accurately estimating the thermo-elastic properties of the composites under different saturation conditions.

Monte Carlo method with Bezier curves for the complex conductivity of curved CNT-polymer nanocomposites

Chao Fang et al.

Summary: The Monte Carlo method is used to calculate the complex conductivity of nanocomposites with curved carbon nanotubes, showing that both conductivity and dielectric constant decrease significantly with curved CNTs compared to straight-line CNTs, and the percolation threshold increases. Frequency effects of complex conductivity depend on the diameter of CNTs, barrier height, and the complex conductivity of the polymer matrix. Other new features of the theory are also highlighted in the study.

A time-incremental homogenization method for elasto-viscoplastic particulate composites based on a modified secant formulation

Stephane Berbenni

Summary: A direct time-incremental homogenization Mori-Tanaka scheme is proposed for two-phase non-linear elasto-viscoplastic materials based on the exact solution of the heterogeneous linear viscoelastic Eshelby ellipsoidal inclusion problem. This approach utilizes the second-order moment of stresses and a modified secant formulation, eliminating the need for Laplace-Carson transforms. The estimates provided by this homogenization model are compared to full-field calculations for two-phase non-linear particulate composites in the literature, under both radial and non-radial loadings.

Thermal conductivity and elastic modulus of 3D porous/fractured media considering percolation

Wenxiang Xu et al.

Summary: This study proposes numerical and theoretical strategies for accurately determining percolation thresholds of porous and fractured media with different shaped pores and cracks, and predicting the thermal conductivity, diffusivity, and elastic modulus of these media. Through extensive experimental, numerical, and theoretical comparisons, it is confirmed that the models can accurately capture the percolation thresholds and properties of the media, making them applicable to various composite material research and prediction.

A micromechanical model for heterogeneous nanograined metals with shape effect of inclusions and geometrically necessary dislocation pileups at the domain boundary

Jianjun Li et al.

Summary: A new micromechanical model was developed in this study to predict the overall mechanical response of heterogeneous nanograined metals, addressing the strength-ductility trade-off issue. Findings showed that tuning the shape of inclusions, extra strengthening, grain sizes, and volume fractions of the inclusions can circumvent the strength-ductility trade-off and achieve outstanding strength-ductility synergy.
