Seismic surface wave attenuation by resonant metasurfaces on stratified soil

Chao Zeng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dispersion relations of Rayleigh waves propagating through vertical oscillators on stratified media. The results show that only the foundational mode is strongly coupled with the vertical resonators at resonance, while higher-order surface modes cross the surface wave band gap reported in homogeneous media.

Summary: This study proposes an approach to explore the band energy structures of elastic metamaterials using the Hamilton principle, Bloch theorem, and finite-element method. Experimental verification on ultralow frequency metamaterials with nonlinear resonators confirms the broadband isolation of longitudinal and transverse waves.

A graded metamaterial for broadband and high-capability piezoelectric energy harvesting

Bao Zhao et al.

Summary: This study proposes a graded metamaterial-based energy harvester for collecting energy from low-frequency ambient vibrations. By combining graded metamaterials, resonators, piezoelectric patches, and a self-powered interface circuit, broad-band and high-capability energy harvesting is achieved. The design is validated through theoretical modeling, numerical simulations, and experiments, showing a significant improvement in power collection performance compared to conventional harvesters.

Wide Rayleigh waves bandgap engineered metabarriers for ground born vibration attenuation

Muhammad et al.

Summary: This study proposes two types of engineered resonant metabarrier designs for attenuating ground born vibrations in the subwavelength frequency region, which can potentially be used to protect infrastructures from earthquake hazards. The effectiveness of the metabarriers in attenuating incoming Rayleigh surface waves is investigated through analytical and numerical models, with findings indicating an extremely wide low frequency bandgap for Rayleigh wave attenuation.

Metamaterial beam with graded local resonators for broadband vibration suppression

Guobiao Hu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates a technique for broadband vibration suppression using a graded metamaterial beam, proposes a design strategy and defines three figures of merit to evaluate its performance. A parametric study reveals the effects of frequency spacing and damping ratio on the vibration suppression performance, and shows that by tuning these parameters, a significant increase in attenuation bandwidth can be achieved.

Lamb's problem for a half-space coupled to a generic distribution of oscillators at the surface

Xingbo Pu et al.

Summary: The study proposed an analytical framework to model the effect of single and multiple mechanical surface oscillators on the dynamics of vertically polarized elastic waves propagating in a half space. Results demonstrate that the approach can accurately model elastic waves interacting with single resonators, couples of resonators, and arrays of resonators, capturing complex dynamics phenomena such as wave conversion and wave localization.
