Nonlocal analysis of edge-cracked nanobeams under Mode I and Mixed-Mode (I plus II) static loading

Daniela Scorza et al.

Summary: In this paper, the behavior of an edge-cracked nanobeam under both Mode I and Mixed-Mode (I + II) static bending loading is analyzed using the stress-driven nonlocal model (SDM), which is applied for the first time in the case of Mixed-Mode loading. The cracked nanobeam is modeled by dividing it into two beam segments connected through a massless elastic rotational spring located at the cracked cross section. The bending stiffness of the cracked cross section is computed using the Griffith energy criterion and the conventional linear elastic fracture mechanics, considering cracks under both Mode I and Mixed-Mode loading. Finally, an edge-cracked cantilever nanobeam subjected to a transversal point load at the free end is analyzed, and the static deflection is calculated and discussed for different crack parameters.

Static and free vibration analysis of functionally graded annular plates using stress-driven nonlocal theory

Mohamadreza Jafarinezhad et al.

Summary: This study investigates the bending and free vibration analysis of a functionally graded annular nanoplate using the stress-driven nonlocal theory. Analytical solutions are obtained for different boundary conditions and the explicit form is expressed in terms of special functions. A finite element method based on the Galerkin technique is also employed to calculate the flexural deformation and natural frequencies. The results are compared with existing literature and indicate a stiffening behavior with increasing nonlocal parameters, resulting in decreased transversal deformation and increased natural frequencies compared to local solutions.

Summary: This study investigated crack initiation and progression in two-dimensional functionally graded plates under dynamic and quasi-static loading conditions using an ordinary state-based PeriDynamic theory. The research found that tailoring the effective material properties in the FG plates in two directions using a rule of mixture can increase plate strength and fracture resistance.

Nonlocal strain and stress gradient elasticity of Timoshenko nano-beams with loading discontinuities

Andrea Caporale et al.

Summary: In this study, a unified approach is used to determine the strain-driven and stress-driven differential equations of Timoshenko nano-beams with loading discontinuities. The proposed models can simulate small scale effects with different types of constitutive laws and consider points of discontinuities for generalized internal forces. Novel constitutive continuity conditions are imposed at the beam interior points of loading discontinuities, providing an alternative to Dirac delta function. Closed-form solutions to practical cases are obtained using the proposed models.

Summary: This research focuses on the transient response of porosity-dependent viscoelastic functionally graded nanobeams subjected to dynamic loads and magnetic field. Nonlocal strain gradient theory and quasi 3D beam theory with Kelvin-Voigt visco constitutive model are employed. Parametric investigations show that the magnetic field and length scale parameter have significant effects on the amplitude, number of cycles, and damping speed of the system.

Free transverse vibrations of nanobeams with multiple cracks

Hossein Darban et al.

Summary: In this study, a nonlocal model is proposed to investigate the size-dependent free transverse vibrations of nanobeams with cracks. The model takes into account the effect of cracks by introducing discontinuities in slope and transverse displacement at the cracked cross-section. The results show that the crack location, crack length, and nonlocality have an impact on the natural frequencies of the nanobeams, and the cracks can cause amplification and shielding effects on the natural frequencies.

Summary: This paper formulates a novel buckling model for nanobeams resting on the Pasternak elastic foundation based on the local-nonlocal stress-driven gradient elasticity theory. Summary: The Mode I fracture behavior of edge- and centrally-cracked nanobeams is analyzed using both stress-driven non-local theory of elasticity and Bernoulli-Euler beam theory. The study demonstrates that nanobeams exhibit superior fracture performance compared to large-scale beams, with the energy release rate decreasing as the nonlocality increases.

Quasi-static and dynamic fracture modeling by the nonlocal operator method

Summary: In this paper, a phase field model is developed and applied to simulate quasi-static and dynamic fracture using the nonlocal operator method (NOM). The method simplifies the implementation by replacing shape functions with differential operators. Two types of phase field models, implicit and explicit, are proposed for different fracture problems. Several benchmark examples are solved to demonstrate the performance of the method.
