Revisiting 2013-2014 Azle seismicity to understand the role of Barnett production on stress propagation and fault stability

Abdulrahman Bubshait et al.

Summary: This study aims to understand the propagation of production- and injection-induced stresses from reservoir layers to basement faults. By establishing a complex coupled flow-geomechanics-fault reactivation model, we have revealed the mechanisms of how production and injection affect fault activities.

Thermal and solubility effects on fault leakage during geologic carbon storage

Saro Meguerdijian et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the impact of solubility on CO2 leakage rates, brine leakage rates, and poroelastic fault destabilization in the context of CO2 leakage from a storage reservoir to a shallow aquifer through a fault. It suggests using the CO2 phase-change path as a variable in future fault-leakage ROMs and highlights the different spatial distributions of thermal stresses and overpressures within a fault.

A two-grid simulation framework for fast monitoring of fault stability and ground deformation in multiphase geomechanics

Saumik Dana et al.

Summary: We present a simulation framework for fast monitoring of fault stability and ground deformation in multiphase geomechanics and demonstrate its efficacy for a joint CO2 sequestration and enhanced oil recovery case study. The framework accurately estimates fault stability, reduces computational burden, allows for fast renditions of flow-induced ground deformation, and enables independent selection of flow and geomechanics grid resolutions.

Effect of Poroelastic Coupling and Fracture Dynamics on Solute Transport and Geomechanical Stability

Minh Tran et al.

Summary: This study investigates the complex interaction between flow-transport-geomechanics-fracture mechanics and proposes a new computational framework to address these coupled problems. By modeling flow and transport processes in fractured porous media, and studying the response of fractures to flow-induced stress perturbations, the mechanisms of transport-geomechanics coupling are revealed. The applicability of the proposed framework is demonstrated through an experimental case study.

A new coupled multiphase flow-finite strain deformation-fault slip framework for induced seismicity

Xiaoxi Zhao et al.

Summary: This study presents a computational framework to understand the impact of plastic deformation on induced fault slip events. Results show that a poroplastic reservoir exhibits larger vertical deformation and delayed slip compared to a poroelastic reservoir, and a reservoir with a smaller modulus than the caprock displays a larger vertical displacement and an earlier onset of both plastic failure and fault slip.

Quantification of fault leakage dynamics based on leakage magnitude and dip angle

Saro Meguerdijian et al.

Summary: This study quantifies subsurface leakage dynamics of fluids, such as CO2, along faults using a coupled multiphase flow-geomechanics-fault slip simulator. It shows that leakage is non-trivially coupled to induced seismicity and multiphase flow along faults due to the effect of fault dip. The direction of gas and liquid phase leakage is determined by slip propagation and buoyancy vector, both of which depend on fault dip.

Geologic CO2 Storage Optimization under Geomechanical Risk Using Coupled-Physics Models

Fangning Zheng et al.

Summary: This study presents an optimization framework for geologic CO2 storage under geomechanical risks, using coupled flow-geomechanics simulations to quantify risks and make optimal decisions. The results show that optimal decisions may differ when geomechanical risks are considered compared to simulations that only focus on flow dynamics.
