DSWEmod - The Production of High-Frequency Surface Water Map Composites from Daily MODIS Images

Christopher E. Soulard et al.

Summary: This study compared the application of Landsat and MODIS data in California and found that the higher revisit rate of MODIS imagery can reduce cloud obstruction and improve the accuracy of high-frequency surface water mapping. The results showed that shorter-interval DSWEmod products can better reveal the timing of surface water peaks and past flood events.

Flood Extent Mapping During Hurricane Florence With Repeat-Pass L-Band UAVSAR Images

Chao Wang et al.

Summary: Extreme precipitation events are causing increased flooding due to climate change. By combining polarimetric decomposition methods and a Random Forest classifier, along with linear polarizations and terrain variables, the accuracy of flood inundation classification can be significantly improved. This research is important for flood disaster response, management, and prevention.

Surface Water Mapping from SAR Images Using Optimal Threshold Selection Method and Reference Water Mask

Olena Kavats et al.

Summary: This research proposes a method for mapping the surface of water bodies using satellite data, which can address the issues of identifying small water areas and imbalanced water/land classes. By comparing with reference water masks, the method enables the selection of optimal parameters to improve the quality of water body mapping. In practical applications, this method can accurately identify water bodies under different conditions.

Assessing the 2022 Flood Impacts in Queensland Combining Daytime and Nighttime Optical and Imaging Radar Data

Noam Levin et al.

Summary: In this study, a combination of optical and radar sensors, as well as nighttime and daytime sensors, was used to monitor and evaluate the impact of a flood event in Australia during the summer of 2022. By utilizing various imagery data and a new spectral index, the extent of flooding was accurately mapped, and changes in electricity usage were analyzed as a proxy for flood impact.

Augmented Normalized Difference Water Index for improved surface water monitoring

Arash Modaresi Rad et al.

Summary: This study provides a critical review of satellite remote sensing water indices and introduces a novel Augmented Normalized Difference Water Index (ANDWI) that utilizes an expanded set of spectral bands and dynamic thresholding. The ANDWI with Otsu-thresholding outperformed other indices in terms of overall accuracy. Additionally, a new cloud filtering algorithm and a Google Earth Engine App were developed to improve the accuracy and efficiency of water body delineation.

Estimating Floodplain Vegetative Roughness Using Drone-Based Laser Scanning and Structure from Motion Photogrammetry

Elizabeth M. Prior et al.

Summary: Vegetation heights derived from drone laser scanning and structure from motion photogrammetry were used to determine hydraulic roughness at different spatial scales. Results showed that the pixel method had the lowest water surface elevation root mean square errors, and that the reach method tended to overestimate while the pixel method tended to underestimate flood extents. Models utilizing DLS data had lower WSE RMSEs compared to models using SfM.
