Real-time and concurrent optimization of scheduling and reconfiguration for dynamic reconfigurable flow shop using deep reinforcement learning

Shengluo Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the real-time and concurrent optimization of scheduling and reconfiguration for a dynamic reconfigurable flow shop using deep reinforcement learning. The objective was to minimize the total tardiness cost of all jobs by configuring flow lines and scheduling jobs. We established an intelligent scheduling and reconfiguration system and proposed a new variant of deep Q-network algorithm and an EDQN_T algorithm. Experimental results showed that our proposed algorithms outperformed popular DRL algorithms and priority dispatching rules in terms of solution quality, with a decision time of only a few milliseconds.

Production scheduling in a reconfigurable manufacturing system benefiting from human-robot collaboration

Behdin Vahedi-Nouri et al.

Summary: This paper explores an integrated production scheduling and workforce planning problem in a Reconfigurable Manufacturing System (RMS) using reconfigurable machines and human-robot collaboration. A new Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model and an efficient Constraint Programming (CP) model are developed to solve the problem. Computational experiments show the superiority of the CP model over the MILP model in smaller instances and its ability to find high-quality solutions for larger instances within a reasonable computation time. It provides recommendations for managers dealing with this complex problem.

RMS balancing and planning under uncertain demand and energy cost considerations

Xavier Delorme et al.

Summary: Recent years have seen rapid changes in customer demand and shorter product life cycles, along with growing concerns about sustainability and energy supply fluctuations. Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems (RMS), with their scalability feature, offer a valuable solution by allowing prompt reorganization of production resources to adapt to external factors. However, these challenges should be anticipated during the design stage of the production system to maintain competitiveness and meet expectations. A bi-level optimization problem can be modeled to consider the expected performance of the system in terms of productivity and energy efficiency, taking into account demand uncertainty. A matheuristic approach is proposed and shows consistent energy cost savings, even with few configurations.

Summary: This article addresses the one-commodity pickup and delivery traveling salesman problem and proposes a hybrid metaheuristic approach to solve it. The approach is tested on instances with up to 500 nodes and demonstrates competitive results. It is also applied to real-case instances based on a bicycle sharing system.

An improved genetic algorithm for flexible job shop scheduling problem considering reconfigurable machine tools with limited auxiliary modules

Jiaxin Fan et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the flexible job shop scheduling problem with machine reconfigurations (FJSP-MR) and proposes an improved genetic algorithm (IGA) to minimize the total weighted tardiness. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is highly efficient in various scenarios and the specially designed local search is an effective component for the basic genetic algorithm. Additionally, a real-world engineering case is studied to demonstrate the applicability of the algorithm to large-scale problems.

Summary: The study focuses on the integrated optimization problem of configuration design and scheduling for a reconfigurable manufacturing system (RMS), and proposes a multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MoPSO) method. Comparative results show that MoPSO outperforms epsilon-constraint method and nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) in both solution quality and computation efficiency.
