Conversion of food waste to renewable energy: A techno-economic and environmental assessment

Yunzhi Chen et al.

Summary: Increasing quantities of food waste have become a concern due to high disposal costs in landfills and high greenhouse gas emissions. Collecting food waste from landfills and turning it into renewable natural gas using anaerobic digestion could be a win-win option for both food waste disposal and renewable energy production. This study focuses on the techno-economic and environmental assessment of food waste to energy via anaerobic digestion to bridge the gap in existing research.

A nuclear-hydrogen hybrid energy system with large-scale storage: A study in optimal dispatch and economic performance in a real-world market

An Ho et al.

Summary: This study investigated the optimal dispatch and economic analysis of a novel nuclear hybrid energy system (NHES) with large-scale hydrogen storage and a novel control scheme. The findings revealed that a more aggressive control strategy maximizes revenue in high price volatility load zones, while a moderate control strategy performs better in less oscillatory load zones. The NHES can store energy during low price periods and sell electricity during high price periods, generating additional revenue and participating in the ancillary services market. Despite higher costs and a higher levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) compared to stand-alone nuclear plants, the NHES still remains competitive with other new forms of electricity generation. However, both the NHES and stand-alone plants are not economical in the existing electricity market. The NHES has a positive annual cashflow due to the extra revenue, unlike the standalone plant. Additionally, the hybrid plant requires less cost subsidy to become economical compared to a stand-alone plant.
