Robot Scheduling for Mobile-Rack Warehouses: Human-Robot Coordinated Order Picking Systems

Zheng Wang et al.

Summary: Intelligent part-to-picker systems have become popular for agile order fulfillment in various industries, raising challenges in designing work schedules and operational scheduling problems. This study focuses on finding suitable robot schedules considering the fluctuations in human pickers' working states, using a dynamic program model and an ADP-based solution approach. The model, calibrated with data from a leading e-commerce company in China, demonstrates high-quality solutions that reduce picking times by 10% compared to traditional methods.

Hybrid order picking: A simulation model of a joint manual and autonomous order picking system

Sven Winkelhaus et al.

Summary: Order picking is a critical process that affects business success in various industries. While manual operations are still common, there are also technologies available to automate or support order picking. This study examines hybrid order picking, where autonomous robots and human pickers work together, and evaluates its performance using a simulation model. The results show that hybrid order picking can improve throughput and reduce costs compared to pure manual or automated order picking. Future research potentials are discussed based on the simulation results.

Assistive devices for manual materials handling in warehouses: a systematic literature review

Christoph H. Glock et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates how technical assistive devices for manual materials handling were analysed in the literature in a warehousing context, identifying works that discuss the economic and/or human factors impact of such devices. The evaluation shows which types of assistive devices were analyzed in the past and from which perspectives they were examined. Some works focused on operator well-being or efficiency, while others analyzed the devices' performance in terms of both dimensions.

Towards Productive and Ergonomic Order Picking: Multi-Objective Modeling Approach

Brigita Gajsek et al.

Summary: This study introduces a solution to the storage assignment problem that considers order picking time, energy expenditure, and health risk, using a multi-objective model. The downside of solely optimizing health risk is an increase in order picking time, but emphasizing time has proven effective in finding a compromise between optimal time and reducing high injury risk work situations.
