Developing NiAl-strengthened HSLA steels by controlling nanoscale precipitation and high-angle boundaries

Xiangyun Zhang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop NiAl precipitation-strengthened HSLA steels by introducing Al to the alloy composition. The results showed that Al facilitated the precipitation of nanoparticles, improved the grain boundary structure, and optimized the dislocation distribution, leading to a steel with good ductility while maintaining strength.

The interaction mechanisms between dislocations and nano-precipitates in CuFe alloys: A molecular dynamic simulation

Hongwei Bao et al.

Summary: Molecular dynamics simulations were used to study the interaction mechanisms between dislocations and nano-precipitates in CuFe alloys. The simulations revealed that nano-precipitates can both promote twinning deformation and dislocation gliding away from themselves, as well as prevent dislocations from moving towards them. A hybrid model was developed to demonstrate the strengthening effects of nano-precipitates, with an optimized size obtained.

Unraveling a novel precipitate enrichment dependent strengthening behaviour in nickel-based superalloy

Yang Chen et al.

Summary: This study systematically clarifies the effect of size deviation degree on the complex interaction between precipitates and dislocations in nickel-based superalloy. A new statistical approach using minimal spanning tree is proposed to accurately assess the contribution of spatially randomly distributed precipitates to the strength. The result shows that the maximal precipitation strengthening occurs when the size variance is equal to the average size.

Cooperative effect of strength and ductility processed by thermomechanical treatment for Cu-Al-Ni alloy

Xiaolin Tian et al.

Summary: This work investigates the strength-ductility cooperative effect of Cu-Al-Ni alloys through thermomechanical treatment. The results show that high strain rate induces the introduction of dislocations and twin structures, and high strength can be achieved at a slightly lower temperature than the elongation peak. The optimization of strength-ductility mainly involves twining/grain boundaries optimization and second-phases optimization, which contribute together without conflict. The interaction between twins and dislocations is dynamically displayed using a phase-field-crystal method. The typical characteristics of high strength-ductility copper alloys include small grain size, high twin density, and stable grain boundary.

Phase diagram of the Cu-Ni3Al pseudo-binary system

Satoshi Semboshi et al.

Summary: In this study, the phase diagram of the Cu-Ni3Al pseudo-binary system was experimentally determined using cast and fully heat-treated alloys. The microstructure transitioned from a single alpha-Cuss phase to various eutectic phases and ultimately to a single gamma'-Ni3Al phase as the Ni and Al content increased. The solidus and liquidus temperatures also increased with the (Ni+Al) content. The phase diagram will be valuable for the development of Cu-Ni-Al alloys with exceptional strength and electrical conductivity.

Generalized method of sensitivity analysis for uncertainty quantification in Calphad calculations

Nicholas Ury et al.

Summary: Calculation of Phase Diagrams (Calphad) is a method for thermodynamic calculations using experimental data. This paper proposes a generalized method of uncertainty propagation through Calphad calculations, which can be applied to any thermodynamic system. The study finds that this method is faster and more versatile than Monte Carlo methods, and it also provides good quantification of uncertainty.

Prediction of shear strength of cluster-strengthened aluminum with multi-scale approach describing transition from cutting to bypass of precipitates by dislocations

E. V. Fomin et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the strength of clusters in aluminum alloy with copper content ranging from 20-100% depends on the number of copper atoms rather than the direct influence of copper concentration. Introducing copper-containing clusters into aluminum alloy can reduce the inhomogeneity of plastic deformation and aligns with experimental results.

Micro-alloying effects of Mn and Zr on the evolution of ageing precipitates and high temperature strength of Al-11.5Si-4Cu alloy after a long-time heat exposure

Guangjing Li et al.

Summary: Micro-alloying effects of Mn and/or Zr on the microstructure evolution of ageing precipitates in Al-11.5Si-4Cu alloy were investigated. Mn decreases yield strength at room temperature but increases it at 300°C after long-time heat exposure, while Zr significantly improves yield strength at room temperature and 300°C, but degrades it after the same heat exposure. Zr increases precipitate density of theta' phase and yield strength at room temperature, while Mn suppresses theta phase formation during heat exposure, leading to minimal strength decrease at 300°C. Zr does not improve thermal stability of theta' phase and reduces yield strength at 300°C after prolonged heat exposure.

Strong elemental interaction enhances the thermal stability of coherent precipitation strengthened Cu-Ni-Al alloys

Z. M. Li et al.

Summary: The coherent cuboidal precipitation of gamma' phases can significantly enhance the high temperature properties of Cu-Ni-Al alloys. Introducing Si with strong elemental interaction can promote the precipitation of gamma' phases and suppress discontinuous precipitation, leading to improved stability of the matrix. The addition of Si decreases Gibbs free energy of gamma' phase and enhances cohesive energy, making the alloys more stable and homogeneous, thus optimizing the high temperature properties of Cu-Ni-Al-Si alloy.

Selective laser melting of Cu-Ni-Sn: A comprehensive study on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and deformation behavior

Chao Zhao et al.

Summary: A comprehensive understanding of the deformation behavior and strengthening mechanism of the selective laser melted (SLM) alloy is crucial for maximizing the potential of the SLM process. This study focuses on the impact of SLM on the microstructure, deformation behavior, and mechanical properties of Cu-Ni-Sn alloy compared to their cast counterparts (CC). The SLM microstructure, characterized by increased dislocation density, offers a superior combination of tensile strength and ductility, mainly attributed to grain refinement, dispersed precipitation, and increased dislocation density.

Experimental and modelling assessment of ductility in a precipitation hardening AlMgScZr alloy

Han Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of precipitation on ductility in precipitation hardening aluminium alloys. The results showed that the ductility decreases when shearable precipitates occur, and increases with shearable precipitates being replaced by nonshearable precipitates. The variation in ductility is mainly controlled by the dynamic recovery rate of the dislocations.

Age-Induced Precipitating and Strengthening Behaviors in a Cu-Ni-Al Alloy

Satoshi Semboshi et al.

Summary: The study focused on the microstructural response and variations in strength and electrical conductivity of a Cu-20 at. pct Ni-6.7 at. pct Al alloy during isothermal aging at temperatures from 723 K to 1023 K (450 degrees C to 750 degrees C). It was found that the age-induced strengthening mainly resulted from fine dispersion of gamma'-Ni3Al coherent particles in the grains, exhibiting a maximum at an aging temperature of 873 K (600 degrees C). The fine precipitation strengthening by gamma'-Ni3Al coherent particles resulted in excellent mechanical properties, comparable to other commercial age-hardened Cu alloys.
