A generalized physical-based failure indicator parameter used in crystal plasticity model to predict fatigue life under low cycle fatigue and creep-fatigue loadings

Dewen Zhou et al.

Summary: A physical failure indicator parameter based on dislocation movement was proposed to assess the damage of components under LCF and CFI loadings, and the concept of net slip was introduced through the evolution of dislocation movement. The proposed method can effectively capture creep damage and the accuracy of life prediction was validated at different temperatures.

A quantitative method to determine the region not influenced by injected interstitial and surface effects during void swelling in ion-irradiated metals

Yongchang Li et al.

Summary: We present a method to determine the depth regions affected by interstitial effect and surface effects in self-ion-irradiated metals, with the aim of identifying safe analysis zones for ion-neutron correlations. Experiments were conducted on single crystal iron at various ion energies, and it was found that energies <= 1 MeV did not yield a safe depth range, while energies >= 2.5 MeV provided useful safe zones. The width of the surface-affected zone was found to be twice that of the void-denuded zone, and the interstitial-affected region did not spread with increasing damage level. This study enhances the credibility of ion simulation for predicting void swelling in neutron environments.

Prediction of hardening effect by irradiation-induced vacancy clusters with dislocation dynamics

Kaitao Wu et al.

Summary: The article discusses the importance of developing irradiation hardening models for nuclear materials and proposes a VC-dislocation interaction model based on the dislocation dynamics method. The model is implemented in open-source software and used to investigate the hardening effect of varying size and number density of vacancy clusters. The simulation results show that the hardening effect is proportional to the 2/3 power of the total number density, and a modified hardening model is proposed to improve the accuracy of predicting VC-induced hardening in tungsten.

Experiments and/or crystal plasticity finite element modeling of the mechanical properties of pristine and irradiated tungsten single crystal

Summary: In this study, a comprehensive solution for predicting the neutron irradiation hardening of tungsten is presented. The model is calibrated and validated using compression and indentation experiments, and improved by incorporating more accurate irradiation defect strengthening mechanisms. Results show a good match between the predicted and experimental hardness increases, and discuss the limitations of conventional hardening models.

Quantifying the Glide Resistance to Dislocations in Proton-Irradiated FeCrAl Alloy

Bingqiang Wei et al.

Summary: The effect of dislocations on glide resistance in C35M FeCrAl alloy induced by proton irradiation was quantified using in-situ micropillar compression testing in a SEM. The study found that the irradiation-induced high-density and small-sized dislocation loops increase the CRSS, and {112} slip system shows a larger hardening effect compared to {110} slip system.

Electro-thermal-mechanical coupled crystal plasticity modeling of Ni-based superalloy during electrically assisted deformation

Jia Gao et al.

Summary: This study developed an electro-thermal-mechanical crystal plasticity model to investigate the multiscale deformation mechanism of materials during electrically assisted formation. The model considered the effects of Joule heating and nonthermal effects, as well as the influence of current density threshold on dislocation density and slip resistance. The model provides a quantitative method to analyze the electrically assisted formation process.

Summary: This study introduces a new dislocation bow-out model to interpret the strain rate sensitivity of fcc metals without using empirical terms. The research results indicate that strain rate sensitivity depends on the ratio of obstacle strength to zero-stress activation energy, and the values obtained match well with experimental data.

Indentation size effect, geometrically necessary dislocations and pile-up effects in hardness testing of irradiated nickel

M. A. Mattucci et al.

Summary: The study compared the response of Ni irradiated with protons to the non-irradiated material, based on dislocation density, through TEM analysis and nano/micro-scale indentation tests. The results showed a bi-linear trend in the Nix-Gao model for both irradiated and non-irradiated material, indicating a transition in deformation mechanisms at the nano-scale. It was suggested that the increase in hardness observed in the irradiated material during nanoindentation could be attributed to a higher density of geometrically necessary dislocations.
