Shear loading dominated damage mechanisms and strain localization studied by in situ 3D laminography imaging and Digital Volume Correlation for AA2198-T8

Ante Buljac et al.

Summary: Damage and strain changes during shear dominated loading were studied using synchrotron laminography and digital volume correlation (DVC). The results showed localized strain fields and grain-related elongated cracks in the shear zone, with damage primarily concentrated in the gage section subjected to shear. The total Hencky von Mises strain close to failure was measured in the material bulk, reaching values between 0.6 and 0.7.

Lode-dependent second porosity in porous plasticity for shear-dominated loadings

Gilles Rousselier

Summary: A combined model of uncoupled failure criteria and porous plasticity is developed to describe the ductile fracture of metallic alloys under shear-dominated loadings. The model involves two material parameters that can be calibrated with different specimen geometries. Finite element calculations show that the model can accurately predict the load-displacement curve and fracture mechanisms of the specimens.

Analysis of shear ductile damage in forming processes using a micromechanical model with void shape effects

Pouya Tajdary et al.

Summary: The aim of this work is to investigate and predict ductile failure in forming processes. Experimental results suggest that failure can be due to shear-dominated loadings. The micromechanical Madou-Leblond model is used to simulate numerically failure during forming, which can account for void shape effects under shear loadings. The model accurately reproduces failure and crack shape in different processing conditions. Comparisons with the GTN model highlight the importance of void shape effects upon failure.

Unit cell calculations under fully characterized stress states

Summary: This study proposes a method to explore the behavior of a unit cell under the most complex stress states, implemented in the commercial finite element software Abaqus. The results show that the developed method is accurate and computationally efficient. Additionally, it is found that ductile failure is an anisotropic process, with anisotropy intensifying in the presence of shear loads.

Porous plasticity revisited: Macroscopic and multiscale modeling

Gilles Rousselier

Summary: The paper compares the mechanical behaviors of the GTN model and the Rousselier model, revealing their different performances in strain localization, as well as discussing issues related to void growth and finite element discretization. The GTN model is unable to achieve plane strain localization under certain stress conditions, while the Rousselier model is capable of achieving this goal under all stress conditions.

Summary: Experimental studies show that the strength of ductile metals depends significantly on stress state and stress history, impacting the safety and lifetime of engineering structures. This paper focuses on the numerical analysis of load path influence on damage and fracture behavior of aluminum alloys, discussing a continuum damage model that considers stress state and loading history effects.

On the coupling of damage and single crystal plasticity for ductile polycrystalline materials

Bjorn Hakon Frodal et al.

Summary: This study presents a crystal plasticity model that considers the effects of voids or micro-cracks on damage evolution and ductile failure in a single crystal. By simulating the behavior of four different aluminum alloys, the unique properties of each alloy, such as yield strength, work hardening, grain structure, and tensile ductility, are investigated. The capability of the proposed crystal plasticity model is demonstrated through comparison of finite element simulations and experimental tests, showing good agreement between the two and accurate prediction of various shapes of failed specimens.
